    Jul. 1, 2006 - Brad Jamieson

The movie has much going for it: an insider’s look inside the world of fashion, good strong performances by Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt - who are both believably shallow and terrified when they hear Miranda's voice – and the likable presence of Hathaway. Oh yes, and, Streep as the fabulous villain.

Streep plays Miranda with a vicious wit, wearing this character’s disappointment on her expensive sleeve. As editor of the magazine, she never seems angry, just bored by everyone else's incompetence. Instead of the more cliché elements of screaming hissy fits or raging hysterics, she merely underplays the part. She makes the character more human and less scary than she's supposed to be. Making and breaking careers with one nod, her "That's all" becomes a catchphrase, delivered in a ruthlessly passive aggressive tone.

While this may seem like another ho-hum Cinderella piece, Hathaway brings it alive with a worthy performance and looks great in an ongoing series of outfits from the latest D&G collection. But, in the end, Streep owns the movie in a wicked comic performance that will be remembered. – B.J.
