n this sequel to "The Curse of the Black Pearl," Johnny Depp is indeed back with a vengeance in Dead Man's Chest, whipping across the deck as the swashbuckling Capt. Jack Sparrow, stealing every scene in which he appears. Director Gore Verbinkski, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio and most of the crew has reunited under the reign of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, including Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley – in a fun but confusingly paced piece with a shipload of buckle to swash and the now standard CGI effects.

Working his Brando formula to the hilt, Depp is clearly having fun with this sequel – seemingly at the movie's expense. A good thing, as Depp’s appearance alone could make Dead Man's Chest one of those rare sequels that equal their predecessors in both quality and satisfaction.
The curse on the Black Pearl has been lifted, but now despicable East India Trading Co. rep Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) has set his sights on seizing the fabled Dead Man's Chest in order to gain control of the apparently undead Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), and thusly using this power to destroy all the pirates of the Caribbean. However, Sparrow has a debt to settle with the heartless villain Davy, so he hatches a scheme to track down the Dead Man's Chest, which was rumored to contain Davey's still beating heart.
