or all you Miami Design District dwellers there is a new sushi place on the block. Domo Japones is brand new and awaiting your discerning taste buds. Dare to dig into the black edamame or the surf ‘n’ turf miso cappuccino soup. The menu selections are unique, interesting and surprising in their accuracy.
Deep leather booths and contemporary art on the walls help to produce the chilled out vibe inside Domo, while that very vibe gets a Champagne- and sake-fueled boost in the lounge upstairs. Amir Ben-Zion (Miss Yips, Bond St) is behind the Japanese-inspired bistro, bringing in Sushi chef Naohiro “Nao” Higuchi (from from Nobu at Atlantis in Paradise Island and Chef de Cuisine Timon Balloo (Azul, SushiSamba).
For value and quality, you really can't beat the sushi at Domo Japones. Slices of fish are generous in size and very fresh. The black edamame and surf ‘n turf miso are both worth trying. Proscuitto wrapped shrimp is a bit obscure, but well-prepared nonetheless. The Sushi/Sashimi combination dinner comes with miso soup or salad and a generous serving of sushi and sashimi, including scallop, albacore, salmon, tuna, toro, yellowtail and 1/2 a spicy tuna roll. Pieces of sushi a la carte ($3-7) offer a wide variety of choices -- including baby scallop, freshwater eel and toro. surf and turf miso, Kobe beef a la plancha, and the mirin-glazed short ribs rich sweet soy flavor.
Green tea ice cream is a nice ending, with a slightly bitter finish without excessive sweetness. Chefs Naohiro “Nao” Higuchi and Timon Balloo have let their creative juices flow and I’m predicting the result, Domo Japones, has become a neighborhood fave. –J.T.

This place is a great restaurant to meet for a light dinner. It has a good authentic selection of Japanese food. Worth trying! The tables are small and seats are a little uncomfortable though.
