A Good Year
Nov. 7, 2006 - Brad Jamieson
Irritated that he must trek out into the French countryside to assess “La Siroque," Max is eventually put in a comfortable frame of mind by a mixed bag of French characters that remind him of his childhood days in the region. That childhood is seen in flashbacks as Max hastens to sell the property and get back to his shallow life in London.
Still, Max has no regard for the vineyard workers he grew up with, Francis (Didier Bourdon) and wife Ludivine (Isabelle Candelier). He just wants to unload the house as quickly as possible, enlisting the aid of a lawyer-friend (Tom Hollander). But things don't work out as planned, as Max misses his plane and gets stuck staying at his departed Uncle's home reliving fond childhood memories. Naturally, it’s not long before the breathtaking landscape and the sweetness of the French countryside work their magic on Max. Not to mention Fanny (Marion Cotillard), the French beauty who Max knew from his childhood.
While the photography is stunning, the supporting cast superb and the French countryside naturally irresistible, the film sadly lacks the substance of a full feature. With its moralizing about the joys of country life versus the ruthless dog-eat-dog city existence, Good Year lacks the depth needed for the emotional draw one expects of films of this genre.
