The Iraq War action blockbuster Green Zone finally comes to cinemas this week three years after the work began on the film. Based on the book Imperial Life In The Emerald City by journalist Rajiv Chandrasekaran, the film is an ambitious attempt to combine earnest political drama with action movie theatrics. It’s a tricky combination indeed, but with director Paul Greengrass behind the camera the movie at least had the right man for the job. Greengrass has led a schizophrenic career over the last decade, flip-flopping from directing painfully real docudramas based on real life tragedies (the amazing Bloody Sunday and United 93) and the big budget action spectacle of the Jason Bourne movies. On paper Green Zone seems to be a perfect meld of his two filmmaking styles, but unfortunately it doesn’t quite work in practice. The movie is certainly interesting, but very uneven.
Given the fact that the film is based on a journalistic document describing the bumbling attempts of the US to take control of Iraq and “find” the WMDs, it should come as no surprise that Green Zone features a myriad of characters and subplots battling for attention. There’s a troubled journalist played by The Wire’s Amy Ryan who claims to be searching for the truth about the cause of the war, but might just be feeding government propaganda to the public. Then there’s a slimey government stooge played by Greg Kinnear (an actor who has perfected the portrayal of the ‘sleazy douchebag’) struggling to make it seem like the war is justified while battling with a CIA agent (the always excellent Brendan Gleeson) trying to prove him wrong. We also see the beginning of the Iraqi insurgence movement starting to form, but at the center of it all is a confused US soldier played by Matt Damon determined to discover why he’s fighting a war. .. continued » |
