orget Three. Poo poo six. Ten is the magic number. I’m not sure if Ten Scene Cuisine is or isn’t the tenth establishment to take over the location on the corner of Memorial Drive and 10th Street, but it sure as heck seems like it. Hallelujah, that address just made me realize the reasoning behind the choice of this post-modern resto’s moniker. Of course, although it’s likely the most accurate, it’s still just one theory of many. “The 10 Commandments” could be one of the waiters’ favourite flicks. The 10th could be the birth date of the owner’s granddaughter. It could be the number of times the head chef flunked his driver’s license test. All the speculation leads to one inevitable conclusion: who gives a rat’s ass? Clearly, naming things after numbers is très chic. Add to that the rhyming nature of the “Scene Cuisine” and the new handle just rolls off the tongue.
From the entrepreneurs that brought you “Broken Plate” comes this latest entry into the race for Kensington’s most celebrated nightspot. Occupying the space most recently filled by the Verve Kensington, Ten ups the ante by offering what they call a “modern, global menu”. This means for lunch or dinner, you could find yourself dining on Portobello fritters (served with a pesto dip) and pork-filled fried dumplings (and a little chili oil), topped off with a mojito chicken salad (organic greens, cucumber, and grilled chicken tossed in a tangy mint-lime dressing). Follow that up with some Jerk Chicken, or Hoisin beef as an entrée and then return your tray to its upright position because, my jetsetting friend, you’ve just become the globetrotter of grub. You can thank Executive Chef Dale Neisz for the menu’s international inspiration.
It’s always inviting to hop on a culinary cruise that’s slightly different than the tasty, but slowly-getting-tired Asian Fusion that’s become the norm for many upscale urban eateries. Ten out of ten on this count. The numerically named establishment also gets impressive full marks for completely refashioning the signature space with retro mod fabric across the walls and warm accents throughout. Far more polished and glossy than it once was, the new contempo ambiance is pretty fancy.
This would be the appropriate place to give a top 10 list of reasons why you should go and check out “Ten Scene Cuisine” already. I’ll give it my best shot: the always trendy Kensington hood, the cool new aesthetic, the smoking hot Jerk Chicken, same owners as the consistently reliable Broken Plate, savoury Smoked Brie, delicious Ahi Tuna Tartar, up-to-the-minute post-modern style, steamed Coconut Mussels, a 10-course chef’s tasting menu that lasts 2 hours, and, finally, the number one reason is – you guessed it – Ten Scene Cuisine rightly deserves the same digits once reserved for the 1978 movie starring Bo Derek’s bodacious bod. Their John Hancock might be numbered, but here’s one fan who hopes that their days aren’t.

We kept hearing good things about Ten and finally got ourselves out there for our anniversary this week.
Our first impression walking in was, wow, this place is beautiful!! With reading some of the reviews, we were wondering how the service would be, fortunately we had no problems, we had a young friendly guy, who was knowledgeable and efficient.
We found the menu to be unique and intriguing. We wanted to try so many things but ended up with the lobster martini and lollipops, delish!! for dinner we ordered the jerk chicken and banana vanilla salmon, totally recommend the salmon, the chicken was amazing, but the salmon was awesome! We were too full to have a dessert each so we split the soufle, again, awesome!!
It was a good anniversary for us and we were very pleased with the restaurant. We will be definately going back!

Altho, the decor is amazing the service is not.
I took my friend out for dinner for what I thought was "heineken thursdays" as advertised on their website ($4 brews). The food was slow but tasty with tiny portions and a hefty price tag. The flavors were "asian fusion".. I think the chef had recently discovered the miracle of hoisin sauce, as he felt the need to include it in most of the dishes we sampled on their shared plates.
My big surprise came when I recieved the bill which charged my beers at full price. When I mentioned to the server the ad on their website he looked very puzzled. I got the manager who explained to me his website was outdated. When I asked him to honor the price on HIS site, he looked miffed but reluctantly agreed. I got a new bill with 4 dollar beers, and he upped the price on our entrees! I was disgusted with his behavior that he would try to save 15 dollars on a 200 dollar bill by cheating us this way.
Needless to say I won't be going back.

3 friends and I decided to try Ten Scene Cuisine out last sat night. Upon arriving we were all impresed with the layout of the room. Long and sleek with a green glow radiating from the bar, we chose to sit in the dining room. Our server was prompt to introduce herself, inform us that the menu had recently changed and let us know her favorites.
We started off with a few apps to share, all which were great. We all loved the porcini chicken, it was amazing. For diner we all tried something different, from lamb rack, salmon, trout and I think pork loin. We were all very pleased with our choises. At the end of our meal we were informed that we "must" try the Jager "bombe" dessert. We were not dissapointed by the suggestion, jagerbomb icecream and meringue with red bull syrup, baked and delicious.
We finished of the night with some nice music with their resident sat night dj Drew Atlas. Very enjoyable from start to finish.

We just had supper with some friends. Appetizers and main plates were good, not exciting or different from other places here in Calgary though. We thought service was poor for the kind of restaurant and what you're paying for your meal/experience, we got 3 different desserts, chocolate suffle and mango pudding were just ok, again not unique or different experience, and then on the menu they have written Caramel Pecan flan with drizzled chocolate... which they didn't know what a "flan" is like. They served more of a pecan pie covered in caramel and chocolate, pretty big piece and pretty sweet... so nothing like a flan which ruined the experience, so we told the server about it and she just said " well that's what we've been serving since we open, so... (and left), no comments or anything at all. Overall, I think the place looks but good, but is not as good on service and food as it looks.

With high hopes our group of 13 arrived to small ROUND tables pushed together. This was difficult to get drinks & food on the small tables. The server seemed like she would would rather be somewhere else. The appi's [small plate on the menu] caused quite a laugh from our party. With prices nearly $10 each, the portions were very small [but tasty overall]. The main coursed arrived in a timely manner. Again, big plates, small portions. All the food was good, just small portions for the price. With the barely attentive server, cramped seating, small portions and premium prices, we have no burning desire to return anytime soon [or ever]. For the same [or less] money, one could have a much better time & fuller belly @ the Keg!

I've dined at this spot a few times before it became Ten, and can't say I liked it as much as I do now. I'm a huge fan of the decore (dark hardwood, green accents throughout the interior). But lets get down to the nitty gritty.
The chef has put together a wonderful variety of cuisine from all over the world. I am slowly making my way through the menu, but I have a few favorites already. Service is just getting into its groove now, after all the bugs were worked out. The menu is a little pricey, but the originality, presentation and flavours definately make up for it.
The atmosphere is sexy, yet fun. And the room can be divided to accomodate private parties in an upper section. This place is bound to last a long time, unlike its predecessors. Can't wait to see next seasons menu, even though the current menu is delicious!

I've gone with a few friends and we all agree, these guys hit the mark for Calgary's outgoing trendsetters. Gimme more hoisin beef! YUMMY!!!

We decided to try out this restaurant with a group of 6 of us. The night started off well - drinks were ordered... Then it took about an hour to get our appetizers. When we mentioned to our waitress that we hadn't received any appetizers she said the restaurant was "swamped." "Fine, okay. We'll get some more drinks." Our appetizers came about 15 minutes after we talked to our waitress. With the exception of one person in our party getting her main course instead of her appetizer. This was sent back and her appetizer came out about ten minutes later. Little did we know this would be the last time we saw our waitress!
Food-wise, all of the appetizers were excellent. The lobster and avocado martini was delicious!
So, then we waited... And, waited... By this time we were two hours into our meal. We hadn't received any explanation of where our entrees were, why it was taking so long, any apology or even a visit to clear our appetizer plates and ask if we would like more drinks. As the 2.5 hour mark came and went we decided we had enough.
We flagged down our elusive waitress and told her that we had waited too long and were just going to leave, could we have our bill. When she brought our bill there was no apology, no discount taken off. So, we went and spoke to the manager, finally got an apology and a 25% discount was taken off our bill. At this point the managers finally got involved - apologizing to our table, giving us their cards, offering a different dining experience the next time we came.
Too little, too late. The managers should have been brought in about an hour prior to handle damage control. We're a laid-back, outgoing bunch who have all spent time in the restaurant industry. If we had been apologized to, explained the situation, been offered more drinks or at the very least, had our plates cleared and water refilled, I think we could have had a very different review of Ten. Instead we ended up running across the street to Julio Barrio's where we finally got to eat. Maybe Ten should hire some of the servers from across the street...
