Some restaurants win respect and others inspire romance; Teatro does both. Located in the 1911-built Dominion Bank in the Arts and Theatre District, Teatro is as refined as its name. Recently spruced up, the eatery has retained its old-fashioned, regal charm.
Though softened a tad by a pitched ceiling and corner windows, Teatro still feels slightly stilted. The overall vibe, in all its discordance, remains static: it's the handsomest Italian restaurant in town. Poseurs beware: Teatro exudes flashiness and requires a correspondingly lavish budget. The room is elegant but unpretentious; tables are set with oversize wine glasses while Corinthian columns embellish eighteen-foot ceilings.
If Teatro's dining room is a stately epic, then the adjoining Opera Room, falsetto free, is an unpretentious character study. The newly minted space, operating as a private function room, is glossy and upscale. Opera Room boasts blasts of modern whimsy that Teatro lacks, standing alone as a separate entity rather than an after-thought appendage (i.e. baby toe). With a tighter crush of people and a louder conversational hum, the Opera Room's conviviality is antidotal to the chilliness of Teatro's sleek contemporary style and subdued palette. Impressive large white globes and my-daughter-went-to-Yale puffy Chairs add to the air of inclusiveness. While hyperattentive and hyperinformed servers wander about, one wall of the dark room changes colours for dramatic effect, reflecting the more frenetic aura.
Neither stagy nor solemn, Teatro's beautifully conceived and elegantly presented food befits the majestic resto. Both rooms showcase Executive Chef Dominique Moussu's modern Italian fare, replete with an eight course tasting menu. First course standouts include a Caesar salad that clocks in at a whopping $18 (no wonder Brutus was so angry), and a Winter Caprese Insalata ($16) served with buffalo mozzarella; a Miso Marinated Sablefish ($18) is partnered with grapefruit and shaved fennel salad, while a duet of seared Quebec fois gras ($26) is full of delectable, warm, woodsy flavours.
The insanely rich, shareable (if you're feeling altruistic) Lobster and scallop lasagna ($32) should not be missed. Light, homemade pasta dishes (available in half portions) range from the Foie Gras Ravioli, with truffled celery root puree, and the Gaspersie Sea Spinach Spaghettinie, with poached lobster and anchovy butter, to the Fairwinds Goat Cheese Ravioli.

8 Reader Reviews | I have been going to Teatro since it first opened. Yes, we have seen some ups and downs, but I assure you that for those of you (or us...) that have been dissapointed in the past, it is worth an other chance. The food is back up to par. They have worked very hard in getting the level of the service back up to where a room of that grandeur should be. Great knowlegeable staff and non pretentious looks. A chane of chef might have done the trick. Maybe if they could get Teatro's first food master back ( I hear he is back in town....) It would bring some of you back but .... try it. It is still my favorite.... And if you do not want to break the bank, sit at the bar and have their new Bar Menu or a couple apetizers for a meal. Enjoy!

When Teatro first opened, it was pretty good, but over time the price crept up, the food and sevice slipped a bit, there are so many new restaurants in Calgary these days, its a why bother to go back again.

Teatro offers great ambience, but their overly casual service and overpriced food doesn't make it a good value for your money. With so many fabulous independent restaurants arriving in Calgary, it doesn't make sense to spend money at a restaurant that offers lower quality meals with service to match. Treat yourself to a restaurant that costs the same but will offer more value with a real chef finishing each dish that they have lovingly created, not a high end Earls.

A fantastic restaurant. The service was top-notch. The waiter was incredibly knowledgeable and was a wealth of information when questioned. They were attentive to our every need and ended up making for what has got to be a world-class experience. The food was well worth the visit and the Chef even shared a complimentary antipasto with our table... again, it was fantastic! Thanks for your attention to detail and for the great ambiance!

Teatro has wonderful atmosphere and a dying reputation as one of the city’s best restaurants. Our party of 4 went for dinner and chose the chef’s large tasting menu and wine for $800.00 before tip. At that price I do expect the food to be excellent and with each course the diner awaits in anticipation for something that wows the senses not disappoints the senses. The food was not terrible but wasn’t great. The service was very disappointing. It was slow when it existed and our waiter did not seem very knowledgeable or interested in explaining our courses as they came out. I have had very good fine dining experiences elsewhere in Calgary, so I will not be back to Teatro.

Teatro felt a bit like viewing an impressive forgery. Like something mechanical trying to imitate Mozart, all of the important notes are played, but there is no staying power in the experience. Worth experiencing, but not repeating, Teatro was a tad disappointing compared to other fine dining experiences around Calgary. However, only because the price didn't match the experience. Add to the service and revisit a few dishes, or cut the price by 30% and I would add another star.
