S ukiyaki House originally opened in 1976, in Gaslight Square. After closing in 2006, owner Anna Kwong (who bought the place in 2003) has finally found a new location in Penn West Plaza. The new space has 2,300 square feet, and boasts clean lines and a 23-foot sushi bar that seats 13 people. Kwong has kept four of her former chefs on staff, and added two new chefs from Japan.
The menu at Sukiyaki Houseis, of course, Japanese. What the menu calls 'Japanese tapas' seem to be shareable plates (perfect for the office workers in surrounding buildings out on lunch break.) Mussels Sakemushi are mussels poached in sake, butter, and garlic, and topped with salsa; Agedashi Tofu is flash-fried and topped with grated daikon and ginger; Gyoza are pan fried dumplings stuffed with pork and vegetables; spicy prawn tempura come with a chili aioli; and Oyster Ponzu come with a citrus soy vinaigrette.
There are a few main dishes on the menu, including grilled teriyaki chicken, grilled ponzu salmon steak, and sake-marinated broiled beef tenderloin, but the real stars here are the sushi and sashimi lists.
The sushi list has all the usual suspects (California rolls, with snow crab meat and avocado; tekka and aka tekka rolls, white or red tuna) as well as a couple of things that are a little more unusual, with distinctly western ingredients. A crunchy spicy tuna roll has hot sauce, cornflakes, cucumber, tempura crumb, sesame seeds, and green onions; a kelly tempura roll has prawn tempura, avocado, flying fish roe, and mayo; a mango roll has prawn tempura, fresh water eel, avocado, flying fish roe, cream cheese, and mango. The Alberta roll, of course, has beef tenderloin, cucumber, and red bell pepper; a volcano roll has seemingly innocent components like spicy green onion tuna, calamari, cucumber, lettuce, sesame seed, and then, boom! The mysterious volcano sauce.
Similarly, the sashimi list has the standards – salmon roe, white and red tuna, mackerel, and various types of salmon – and also includes toro (belly of tuna), uzura (quail egg) and tako (steamed octopus.)

8 Reader Reviews | I don 't understand how it is expensive? I had a two person dinner eating a few rolls: mango, fried cajun and the spicy tuna with a appetizer beef tataki the bill totaled around thirty-ish dollars per person. The chef brought us complimentary dessert (roasted yam maple syrup icecream) the service is fast and excellent our server kept making sure everything was okay and was to our liking, she also had excellent recommendations. I think this restaurant stands out from the rest in Calgary, the sushi rice isn't from a sushi rice making machine, the fish is so fresh and the sushi there isn't a piece of rice making you full it was the right amount of fish on the rice. The beef tataki was so tender it melted in your mouth. Defs will come back

I love this place! We went when it first opened during the summer and were a little disappointed, but I have gone back again and it has really improved! The sushi is truly melt-in-your-mouth, and the presentation is extremely impressive. If you are looking for cheap or bargain sushi, look somewhere else, because Sukiyaki House is definitely an upscale, high quality restaurant whose prices reflect that.

Probably one of the most undesirable restaurants in the city. I had expected better.

Terrible looking place. The fare is very mediocre. In my view this restaurant has no reason to exist.

Had lunch there last week, final bill for 2 with only tea and water to drink was just over $120! While the sushi was decent, I don't think they'll be around charging those kinds of prices in this environment. I think Sukiyaki House got away with such high prices when they were one of a select few Japanese restaurants in Calgary, but obviously this has changed. Not worth the money!

I've been here with my bf and also with family and always leave disappointed. Service is slow, rude (they've asked us to move to another table numerous times) and you always have to wait forever to get a check. They are also overpriced, hence no wait even on weekends. It's just about $20 per person and at this rate you should just go to Palace. Side dishes are plenty yet none of them are good.

Living near this place is great. Things I love include the Japanese plates that arrive so fast. The people have always been really great trying to fit us in when we decide to stop by randomly and when they can't they've let us get take away. Very nice.

After reading the other reviews, we decided to try Sukiyaki House last night. Unfortunately, unlike other reviewers have noted, it was entirely forgettable. I love Japanese cuisine, and eat Japanese food both at home and in restaurants and I'd have to say that I've made better myself. Perhaps because it's new, but none of the food stood out.
