enturies ago, the greek, though not renowned for North American exploration, settled a small segment of Calgary. They named it Strathos Hill. When My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out, the neighbourhood tried to distance itself from a film that, though occasionally funny, relied too heavily upon outdated stereotypes. They renamed the area Strathcona Hill, thus forsaking their Greek roots. Not everyone agreed. In fact, some saw the renaming as absurd. Strathos Bar and Grill stayed strong, their Greekness indelible and static. - S.T.

Where did this little known bit of history come from? The area was originally known as Broadcast Hill due to the concentration of radio antennas on the highest point above Calgary. When the city expanded and the area was developed for residential use it was named Strathcona in honor of the Lord Strathcona's Horse Regiment who camped nearby at Sarcee Plain (now the Westhills Shopping area). As long as there has been development of the neighborhood there has been a pub here - first as The Waterworks for many years, followed by a decade of Bob's On The Hill before the current owners renamed it Strathos. Same at-home atmosphere with better food than ever before, the owner is the chef and makes a point to meet every guest with a warm welcome.
