  • Ruth's Chris Steak House

    Review by Scott Tavener
Do cows taste better in Cowtown? They should. Ruth's Chris, the New Orleans-born steak chain, is ramming bovines into the Calgary tower.

The new steakhouse offers thick cuts of sizzling beef, a horde of beloved sides (i.e. potatoes and vegetables aplenty), and a host of other entrée options that include seafood and lunch-time burgers. Although, going to a steakhouse for a burger is like going to an haute seafood joint for a tuna sandwich.

Ruth's serves a few veggie choices for lefties/altruists, but the true draw is for hard-core carnivores. Available in five classic cuts - T-Bone, Porterhouse, New York Strip, Ribeye, and Filet, - cooked at 982.2°C and accentuated with subtle spices and Homer-placating butter, Ruth's steak is renowned for its sumptuousness. This is due to the fact that the beef comes from Kansas corn-fed cows. And while we do love our mad-cow Canadian beef, the American version is quite tasty. If eating Yankee beef would make you feel like you were doing a disservice to our country, calm yourself - Ruth’s also offers prime slabs of Alberta beef.

Besides large hunks of steak, Ruth’s also offers Louisiana-inspired dishes such as seafood gumbo and shrimp sandwiches. There’s no stipulation that says you must eat the beef - other menu items are available for the less carnivorous. It may help, actually, to not have an obsession with beef if you’re running tight in the cash department. These steaks are no B-quality meat - they’re top of the line, and so are the prices. The cheapest steak is $40, and you have to pay extra for the sides. Ouch.

My Wife and I, along with my parents went to this restaurant back in January. It was a fantastic experience.

After reading several negative reviews on this site and a few others, I was not expecting Ruth's Chris to live up to its hype and its price. I was wrong.

Service: The server was efficient, knowledgable and friendly and not at all pretentious. The host staff was a bit pretentious, but we only dealt with them for a second.

Food: The steaks were fantastic. I've been to Ceasar's, Hy's, Vintage, Chicago, etc. and Ruth's Chris was a step above these places. I'm not terribly well travelled, but the best steak I've ever had. Same with my wife. In fact my wife has been bugging me to go ever since. We're headed back this weekend for her birthday!

Atmosphere: All four of us thought that decor was gorgeous along with the very high ceilings. The restaurant is brand new, so I wouldn't expect any less, but very well done.

Value: As good as the steaks were, for me its hard to justify spending over 300 dollars on a meal for four people when that could feed a whole family for a year in Africa, but if you're going to spend the money I would spend it here...

I give it 4 Stars and have been recommending it to everyone I know.

Just took my family there tonight to try it out at the Ruth's Chris Steak House in Calgary. I was anticipating a really high end restaurant with excellent food. I was disappointed at the end of the meal. It is an expensive restaurant. Average price is $40CAD. When I saw the menu, I thought "OK, I can handle the price but food and service has better be good." Food taste was average. The steak, which is their speciality, was OK. Seriously, I had better tasting steak in Houston and SanFran for lower price. The Waiter was not properly trained. He did not pick up the empty glasses and side plates, and clean up the table in preparation for the main course to come. This is not up to the standard you expect for this kind of prices. I would not go back again.

A few days ago I had the chance to dine at Ruth's Chris and left that experience somewhat disappointed. Full, but thinking that the hype wasn't deserved. Yeah, it's a chain which serves food you can get in any large metropolitan area, but they do a few things and they do them well. In the future I don't think I can help but think of Morton's when someone mentions getting a top notch steak. Ruth, are you taking notes?

If you value good food accompanied by good value stay away from this restaurant!
The evening was truly a horrible experience in dining.
Our reservation was timed to coincide with a theater date. When we arrived at the front door of RCS @ 5:30 (note 5:30)we were greeted by 4 staff. However we were required to wait 15 minutes to be seated. We were 1 of 3 couples in the restaurant. Next came the deplorable wait for service and the downgrading of our prized Alberta beef by the waiter. USDA beef rating is a voluntary standard. AB Beef is notable product of arguably higher standard. Once shocked by the prices and nowhere else to find a food establishment since were would be late for the stage play we were now captive in this establishment.
After the long wait to order, no bread or other items, we were now subjected to the illusion of a steak. It arrives on a hot plate swimming in butter and fat. I doubt that it pure butter since the smoking temp of butter is quite low. This fat drowned piece of beef now spits at you while you wait to have the local firefighter come to subdue the grease fire that is imminent. $40 to clothes stained by deep fat fried meat. This steak is also the thinnest 12 oz steak i have ever seen. In addition your sides are all separate at a cost of $8. Do not order the tomato! what you receive is a beefsteak tomato, sliced and presented with parsley. a .30 cent tomato inflated to $8.
Once i have sent the items back and complained not once was an apology offered nor management attend the table. A dinner for 2 costs $100. This bill for food which is just above fast food in quality is truly a robbery. Avoid this restaurant chain! i would rate this place at a lower star rating but zero star rating does not exist.

Wow the service was excellent! The décor is classy and the overall ambiance makes it a great place to take that special someone for a nice night out. After being led to our table we were approached by a server offering us sparkling or flat mineral water. Since my guest and I were going to a wine tasting after our meal we decided to only have water with our meal. We were then approached by the waiter who politely introduced himself and explained the story behind the restaurant and how the menu was set up and stating that they proudly serve only USDA Prime Beef, but do have one steak which is AAA Alberta Beef as an option. The method of preparation was then described to us by the waiter. Cooked in a special 1800oF oven and seasoned only with salt and pepper served on a 500oF plate and topped with a dollop of butter. Wow sounds great, I decided to stray from the norm and go out on a limb and try this USDA Prime Beef.
Our meal arrives after a short wait and looks and smells great. The waiter delicately places the steaks on the table in front of us and warns us again that the plates are extremely hot (500oF). The butter that was placed on the top of the steaks melts and runs onto the plate and starts to sizzle which was a nice effect. The steak was different, having a softer texture (not more tender) than Alberta beef. It was also perfectly cooked to my liking at medium rare, or so I thought.
This is where all of my experience at Ruth’s Chris goes downhill. Medium rare? Only for the first two bites, the next few were medium and by the time I had finished half of my steak it now was cooked to well done! This 500oF sizzling plate just took a good steak and turned it into beef jerky within four minutes of being served. Who thought of this? NOT IMPRESSED!!

The food was unreasonably over priced; maybe my expectations are too high? But $44 for a 12oz New York steak? Of which only 6oz are edible? WOW!!

    Summary

$88 for 12oz of edible steak, $16 for water, $4 for 1oz of peppercorn sauce, $16 for French fries, $10 for asparagus (shared).
Lunch for two at Ruth’s Chris without alcohol, $134!
Way over priced. There are many far superior steak houses in Calgary where you can get the same great service and a far better steak which doesn’t cook on your plate for half of that price.
Almost forgot to mention that the shirt I was wearing is now ruined $75 (splattered in grease) the tie was OK the pattern hides the grease splatters.

Great Steakhouse, just don't order the steak!
