    **OMG** This place is genuine.
    The food completly real, tasty.
Order in if you cant make it.

It is not, nor should it be, about the decor: It's all about the food.
    And that they serve.

I do not work for them, nor have they given any $ to say this.
I'm saying this because I lived in Thailand when I was a child and have been a Thai fan ever since.

This place makes "The McKing and I" look like what it is, another McChain.

    Ruan Thai, NO DOUBTS!

I had to post this review to challenge some of DenTaTa's, because I've been a happy customer of Ruan Thai since they move to their current location at 11th Ave east of 14 St SW a few years ago. Most of my experience has been with their lunch buffet, which I have once a week (typically), and it's a great value. There is always one each among veg, chicken, beef and pork (always a veg/tofu dish which is very flavourful, full of garlic and gailan), some combo of meat the lime leave, with basil, or with cashew, and a curry- today was a panang with chicken. It's not the finest Thai in town, but it's dependably tasty and sometimes magnificent, especially if you're lucky enough to show up when they have basil chicken on the buffet- my favourite dish there, along with the yellow curry chicken with potatoes (a kind of chicken masaman curry). DenTaTa would have had a better experience by not ordering the coconut rice, which is inauthentic and even the owner admits is for Canadians who don't understand Thai- get plain jasmine rice and be sure to eat your curries with a spoon, Thai style- Thais do NOT use chopsticks except, sometimes, for noodle dishes.

We were sadly disappointed by this place, which seemed highly recommended at various places on the web. Food was spicy enough, but lacked the subtle interplay of flavours generally associated with Thai food. Coconut rice was overcooked and gummy. Appetizer satay skewers were waaay overcooked and just sprinkled with Club House level curry powder. Atmosphere was fine, but not fancy, as one might expect from the extremely high prices for everything from a pot of tea on up.

Service was atrocious, even though there were three servers and the restaurant is not that big. We finally had someone offer to refill our water glasses, ten minutes or so after we had the plates cleared. That may have been because it would take another fifteen minutes to actually get the tab cleared.

Generally unpleasant experience and very expensive for what it was. Recommend trying the Spicy Hut on Edmonton Trail NE or Thai Boat on 32nd Ave NE instead.
