CaPetitelgary, known for its oil, rednecks, and sports fanaticism, is Canada's most American city. And, like any true American city – that is actually Canadian – Cowtown has a kind of go 'big or go home' attitude that tends to be quite nauseating. Good thing then that the new restaurant to enter the big restaurant scene in Calgary is not another Keg or Montana's, who depend more on their portion size than they do on their quality, but rather, a little place that specializes in fresh and seasonal items.

Petite is the name and keeping things small, modern, and tasty is its game. In what was formerly the Inspiring Grounds coffee house, Petite restaurant shines in all of its 30-seat glory. The space, boasting exprosed brick walls, wood banquettes, and ochre coloured walls, is so warm feeling you feel as if you are eating within an antique hearth (without of course being scorched to death). Without becoming too large and in charge, the Calgary restaurant will double its capacity in the coming weeks with the addition of its garden terrace.

But Earl's it will never be. Speaking of which, although the restaurant's chef, Jared Alvey, spent his early years slinging out dry ribs and burgers at the high-class Hooters joint, don't hold it against him; he does have quite a pedigree. Chef Alvey has studied and worked in many kitchens, among them: The Culinary Institute of America, Michelin star-toting Country in Manhattan, the Four Seasons in Toronto, and Neteller in Calgary.

Despite Petite's size, it's bound for a big reputation, especially when the seasonally rotating menu carries a lot of weight. And with small plate offers of Dungeness crab ravioli, stuffed morel mushrooms, wild Alaskan sablefish with gnocchi and pancetta vinaigrette, Spring Creek striploin, a selection of house cured meats and more, the restaurant should have no problem establishing itself among the Calgary culinistes as the big man on campus.

There is, however, a drawback to small restaurants when compared to larger scale dining rooms and usually it comes in the form of a deficit in the booze department. But, with an owner who has spent time exploring the wine regions of the Pacific Northwest and California and who is also a sommelier, Petite promises the perfect selection of wines that will never limit you in options.

Service, food quality, and ambiance. In spite of some menu item faux pas we still keep coming back.

Their crab ravioli is soo good. It's a great little spot but the dinner time traffic makes the wait really long. but its worth it.

Been there twice for dinner; second time was better than the first, which was wonderful. There is a european fineness or attention to detail in the food not often seen in Calgary. Jackie is terrific as sommelier and genial host. Our water glasses were always full, happily; I hate asking for refills. My only quibble - maybe one more dessert choice, or a special in addition to the three on the menu. Love the small size and the brick walls; also wonderful cutlery!

Food was amazing; the service was forced- but attentive. A tad bit arrogant but my taste buds forgave quickly. Price was reasonable for the quality, have been raving about it since. Blows FARM out of the water and then some. Cozy.

If we want to be anal retentive: 4.5 stars.

But, Petite has consistently damn good food with a strong Asian bend. Lunch prices are very, very reasonable. Mains, shared appetizer and beers for two people came to 45$. Maybe I'm insane, or the yuppie has gone to my head, but it seems like a pretty good deal.

I was told about this establishment by friends in Vancouver.

Visiting Calgary, I decided to dine there with two other guests. I walked into a quaint restaurant that is vibriant and inviting. Had the cheese platter to start, all the flavors and textures mixed perfectly together. Although I spent a few years in Alberta and savored many a red protein, the Bison tenderloin was awesome. My Spouse enjoyed the Mussel and Clam Bowl; nice touch on the Fresh pasta and bread.

I did request a NY Cheese Cake, the kitchen said I was too 70's........

Thanks to our hosts, Kirk and Jac

Here's the deal. If i didn't love the food so much, I would never go back. The food is great. The service is SO bad it's comical. I always go in knowing I'm going to get the worst service and then I'm ok. The wait staff is just not really attentive or GREAT at their job, but the baked goods and the food are really great. Be patient and then you'll be fine.

I googled Erin Hershberg, and she's from Winnipeg and is based in Toronto, so why is she writing about Calgary restos?

Anon, you're an idiot. The point of the Obama support stat is to evidence that Calgary is not redneck. You think that people polled in Toronto or Vancouver had no opinion on the US presidential election? And because they DID that it makes them "American"? You're a moron and you should never, ever try to use written language.

I've heard this is a great resto.

Enough! Who cares about Obama and whether we Calgarians are rednecks (we kinda are). Has anybody have anything to say about the restaurant in question? Anything?

"79% of Calgarians supported Obama"...doesn't that comment hint at the reference to Calgary being the most American city in Canada? Obviously Obama won the election due to popular support from the US public and we agreed with the voters in the US and supported the exact same person that the US public voted into office.

But yet the person that made that comment also feels insulted about the author of the review calling Calgary the most American city in Canada. Contradiction no?

I didn't really pick up on the redneck thing - I hear it all day long. From locals!. I haven't tried the place yet. Tomorrow.

    15. Gail Penelton's Review :: June 10, 2009
    Gail Penelton's Rating: Stars
I hate to tell the people who feel offended about the comment that Calgary is the "most American city in Canada" but the author most likely got that comment from textbooks. It is written all over scholarly literature about urban development and urban studies. So if you're going to give the guy hell for making that comment maybe you should email all the university scholars that have ever made the exact same comment.

And the redneck thing? I have to admit compared to other major cities in the world (ie: London, New York, Hong Kong, Chicago, Paris, Tokyo, heck even Toronto (and yes I have spent time in all those places)) we are redneck. Those who have spent all their lives on the continent probably don't notice it but that is to be expected because it is familiar to you so obviously you don't think that the comment is true.

And this is A REVIEW FOR THE RESTAURANT....so here`s mine:
The food was great. I would definitely recommend it to everyone who asks me for a recommendation for a place to go.

From the outside you wouldn't expect much from this place...its the whole tender-nob feel. But venture in, and you wont be disappointed.

The food is THAT great...and for that price and that size...its a great meal for these hard economic times.

I was there last week, drinking and eating with a co-worker. This place is such a Gem. I ordered the Steak and it was very good. It wasn't pretentious. Can't wait to go back

Your review could only be meant for visiting diners as it appears you weren't expecting locals to want to read it. Your comments about the city are distracting and out of place. I have to wonder if this chef is going to see this review as an advantage at all? After all, the writer was so cliche about his Calgary comments does he really know what he is talking about? I feel for the chef. There is nothing unique about Calgary bashing so l have raised my own expectations already.

What in the hell is with the insults about "rednecks" and "most American city in Canada" in this article? Montreal is (by far) the most racially segregated city in Canada, so maybe you should point this out in every news item you post there, and also call it "most American." Toronto has the pollution and the vacations in Florida and I could go on and on.

"Redneck"? 79% of Calgarians supported Obama, making it precisely as "redneck" as San Francisco. Calgary might be "conservative" with its voting patterns and by Canadian (and ONLY Canadian) standards, but it's no more "redneck" than any Canadian city and much less so than nearly all American ones.

I spent the first 33 years of my life in the US and the last 12 in Canada, three in Toronto and nine in Calgary, and I can tell you that Calgary is in every sense a great CANADIAN city and its residents are the most patriotic of Canadians, so stop the slams.
