General Manager Kevin Taylor describes the food at Olives as "innovative Italian". Taking a quick glance at the menu, it's hard to see what is so innovative about it. While Italian fare lends itself quite easily to gourmet cooking, it generally follows a stringent formula – some antipastos, followed by pastas and then a few mains, usually cuts of meat and fresh fish. Olives does not stray from this formula, but yet it can still easily be described as 'innovative'.

There is one reason for this (or three): location, location, location. Olives is only a quick two block stroll away from the Pengrowth Saddledome and right across the street from Stampede Casino. On top of that, it opened during the Stampede. At first this seems like a recipe for disaster. Why would hundreds of rodeo fans in cowboy hats and plaid shirts want to dine on Grilled Squid or Potato Herb Gnocchi? But the question has been deemed moot. In the 22 days since the restaurant has been open, Taylor says, the response has been great. Even since the Stampede ended, the demand has not diminished.

It's an interesting concept. Olives takes advantage of its close proximity to the Saddledome by serving upscale Italian food in a casual atmosphere. He knows that people want a good meal, but they're also in a hurry to see their concert or to see the Flames. Rather than cheeseburgers, Olives allows fans to dine on some real food.

The space itself is divided into three interlocking parts. Diners can eat and relax in the lounge, which acts as an extension of the large main dining room. The dining room looks directly into the kitchen, where hungry diners can watch Executive Chef Johnathan Canning whip up that night's dinner. Sit and drool as he prepares a Beets and Fennel Salad served with Shaved Pecorino, Italian Parsley, and Citrus Mint Vinaigrette ($12). Or if pasta is more your thing, try the fresh Truffle Parsnip and Mascarpone Ravioli ($21), an early favourite for best dish. If you want a good cut of meat, you can't go wrong with the Sous Vide Veal Breast ($29).

If there's no time to sit, there's also a small deli area called Olives To Go. The food may be significantly quicker here, but there's no drop off in quality. There's a variety of paninis, flatbreads and cappuccinos for you to take on your way.

I thought I'd try this place out. The service was absolutely terrible and the waitress had a frown as if she didn't want to be there. Very rude service. Food was quite good..but not the best.

Went on NYE just before the game...a first for all of us... THE WORST MEAL. We tried the flatbread & calamari, flatbread was too salty & calamari was fishy not well cooked. The ribeye steak was burnt on the outside and tasted charred, mashed potatoe with prosciutto was too salty. No value for your money. Olive's has the pretentions of a five star restaurant with a food quality of a low grade culinary school.

Attended the Food Bar Series where you interact with the chefs during preparation of the meal. "Home on the Range" was the name of the event we attende3d Sept 09. Balck Angus Beef Carpaccio,Grilled Spring Creek Ranch Rib Eye and an Okanogan Poached Pear...all servings matched very nicely with a wine pairing AND a take-home print out of the recipes and cooking hints for the food of the evening! Great concept. Lots of fun.
What a great evening. All the chefs were just great and very open to questions, and hints about food preparation.
Atmosphere was very good and the meal was terrific.
Can not wait for the next event.
Hats off to GM Garth Brown and Exec Chef Johnathan Canning. Defineltley going back as soon as possible.

We went for supper before the concert - arrived on time (2 hrs. prior to concert starts, we ended to wait 1.5 hrs to get our food). Food & atmosphere were average. Service was horrible. The night manager was pompous, pretentious even when he tried to apologize. Server was inexperience, unprofessional, and unfriendly (maybe because we did not order any alcohols; when we asked for ketchup to eat with our fries - the response was - this is not MacDonald!) Definitely will not return.

I've eaten at the "to-go" deli, 3/4 times for lunch, and the food is always too salty. The ast time was on the verge of inedible. Will not be going back.

Food was terrible, service was sub par. Reminded me of cafeteria food from elementary school

First visit at Olives tonight. The mushroom soup was good, grilled ahi tuna was not seared enough, polenta was mushy and ragout was mediocre. Pear desert was excellent. Ambiance pleasant, bit on a noisy side. Service was good. Price, it is not cheap for what you get.

We went out on a double date to Olives. The service is amazing, everything was superb, Chef Canning even came to our table to chat with us. Flatbreads were incredible, and the mussels were honestly the best I have ever had. I had the scallops as an entree, perfectly cooked and seasoned. My girlfriend had the Ahi Tuna, which again was perfectly cooked and delicious. My friends had the parsnip and mascarpone ravioli, very unique taste and the veal bolognese, again very well cooked.

As far as the price goes, for the quality of service and food that you get, the prices are very reasonable. A true 4 star, you will not be disappointed.

I can’t believe that anyone would not enjoy a meal at this restaurant. I have eaten there many times with family, friends with business associates and clients and have had nothing but amazing experiences. The atmosphere is fun yet cool and the food is to die for. As a whole I give Olives a 4 star rating the staff and friendly and the Chef John Canning even came out of the kitchen to see if we were enjoying everything, very personal service. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. As for the pile of vomit in the last review obviously you do not have the palette for fine dinning and you should stick to chain restaurants

My husband & I have eaten there a number of times since it opened in July... we always sit in the lounge and have more small plates - we're always really enjoyed it - great food & great service not to mention cool ambience.
Hubby took a customer there a week ago and they all loved it as well.
Nothing bad to say about this place - keep up the good work !!

I like this place a lot. The addition of great pastas and basic cafe fare is definitely a winner. Friendly staff, great coffee, great food, what else do you need?

Was there last night; atmosphere and decor are great I like the modern clean look. Great place to have drinks.

As for the food, it was decent. the antipasto platter is lacking, too small and not enough variety. the grilled squid was great. I had pasta with clams and it was good, pasta was cooked perfectly and the classic dish was messed with.

I can't comment on price because I was out as a client.

    Overall 68%.

Food is over-priced, not creating a value for your dollar. The food needs seasoning on many occasions. I would not eat here again!!!

P.S. Rumor has it that employees are exposed to a light which emits UV light and some employees get burned. Serious issue and management lacked the direction to get it fixed. Do I hear Safety Inspection????

Wayyyyyy overpriced. And really not very good. I got the Ahi Tuna, which was fairly decent in terms of the tuna steak itself...however it was served with mashed POLENTA (corn based paste)and a tiny little clump of tomato ragout... Basically most of plate was covered in mush... The polenta was a vile concoction of the corn based paste, cheese and chive and looked like a pile of vomit... the ragout was decent but again, it was a table spoon of what was essentially a slightly chunky tomatoe sauce. I felt like I was in a nursing home eating all that mushy garbage. And to top it off I had to pay over 40 dollars for it. The decor of the restaurant was cool adn the service was good but if you want to enjoy a meal...definetly go somewhere else. BLECH
