Blame it on the oil boom, perhaps, and matching influx of money but Calgary’s got an identity crisis - downtown restos aim for that NYC vibe and the Lake Bonavista joints identify with Newport (Connecticut) spots. Either there’s a hell of a lot of NYC expats living in Cowtown with a fondness for the urban lifestyle and Newport vacations of past or Calgary has set the bar high by identifying with American’s largest city (what – is Toronto not good enough?). Regardless, this gorgeous lakeside restaurant has stunning views of the water that are prime realty when the sun begins to set. The patio is equally beautiful and the cuisine only enhances the absolutely positive sensory experience to an orgasmic level (if you order the Chateaubriand, of course). Perfect for that “pop-the-question” dinner or engagement announcement meal with the future folks.

If ever a restaurant looked like it was built for the noontime spirits and a cigar set, it's Newport Grill. Sure, it's a grill, but a mighty fine one, and if it takes corporate money and vision to bring such a class act and to our barren dining scene, we're all for it. Located on beautiful Lake Bonavista, the fare is as delicious as the decor, with carefully selected staples like Roast Prime Rib au Jus and the Chateaubriand for Two. Dessert brings the final decadent blow: superb renditions of the Double Chocolate Torte Square. Meeting adjourned!

My husband and I have dined at the Newport Grill on a number of occasions and each experience has been wonderful. Whether attending for a company function or just having an intimate dinner with some of our close friends, we have always left very satisfied. The last time we were there, we were seated by the window with a spectacular view of the lake. Our waiter was very attentive and came back several times during our meal to make sure everything was to our liking. The food was very good and reasonably priced as well. I had ordered the “Fruits de Mere FlambÃ©â€ť which was served tableside. One word comes to mind … “DELICIOUS!”. We would definitely be going back soon. TWO THUMPS UP for Newport Grill!

My husband and l went to the Newport Grill for our 20th anniversary. We were seated by the window although every seat had a beautiful view. We each enjoyed a lovely glass of Malbec wine which was recommended by our server. We shared an appetizer and we both enjoyed a delicious rack of lamb. The staff were friendly, energetic, knowledgeable and attended to our every need. Our bill was around $100 and the evening was priceless. We will return to the Newport again and again as we realize it is not just for special occasions but is very well priced. We thank the Newport and the staff for making our evening so memorable.

This place stinks! Six of us went out to celebrate Valentines together. We live in the neighbourhood and thought we should patronize the local establishment (knowing it would be expensive). We checked in our coats, got the tag, and were sat. We sat and sat. Finally were asked if we wanted drinks & ordered wine. Ten minutes later were told it wasn't available...whatever. Eventually ordered from the "Valentine" menu, although was confused by the prices by each item because if one ordered an entre one got all courses...so some of us didn't order the salad or soup, etc... At the end of the evening we went to get our coats and they had given away my coat to someone else! Despite having a coat tag! WTF. So they gave me the coat that obviously belonged to who ever took mine! It took 4 return visits to straighten this mess out! The service sucked, the food was NOT worth the exorbitant price and the management didn't seemed concerned at all at any inconvenience they may have caused. Will not go back until it changes hands, although it is very conveniently located.

What a COMPLETE JOKE!!!! Hands down the worst fine dining experience I have ever had. When the wife and I go out to a fine dining restaurant we have certain expectations, they are as follows: nice atmosphere, well trained and knowledgable staff and great food. The atmosphere was, OK, if only for the view. The staff were polite and that was about it. I felt I should have IDed the bartender as I am still convinced he was not of age. I would bet a months salary that there was not a staff memeber over the age of 21 on shift that evening. They had no wine knowledge and when I asked questions about the menu the server gave me the 'deer in headlights" look. It gets worse. We had to order 3 different bottles of wine before we were successful in our choice. The server explained that their stock was depleted. The wife ordered the Filet, medium, when it came out it was rare, it was sent back to the kitchen and upon return it was now well done. I requested to speak with a manager and a 'boy' was sent out to speak with me. No word of a lie, this 'manager' looked as if he just graduated from high school. I would describe the food in one word, ATROCIOUS! This was the first time we had been to Newport Grill and it will be the last. The best part of the evening came at the end, WHEN WE LEFT!!! It was the worst $250 I have spent in my entire life. I truely feel that I was robbed of 3 good hours of my life. To all who are considering a night at Newport Grill, please, do not consider any further, from the owner's, to the chef, to management all the way down to the bus boy, they are all in over their heads and have no business being apart of the restaurant industry.

Thumbs down. Food is overcooked and overpriced. Staff is indifferent. So many better choices in the area.
