Sept. 26, 2008 - Shawn Willis
Train carries around an Italian bust, which he lugs everywhere because he swears it's good luck. The gorgeous Renata (Valentina Cervi) comes between two sergeants, the straight-arrow Stamps (Derek Luke) and the swaggering Bishop (Michael Ealy). The Puerto Rican Hector (Laz Alonso) operates the radio and translates.
The movie is filmed beautifully by Matthew Libatique, who creates a harsh look for the film, which resists romanticizing the gorgeous Tuscan setting, while Terence Blanchard’s nonstop symphonic stirrings hovers over every exchange. However, the film is bloated with so much extra substance that it feels very much like two very different movies in one.
The acting is good and the film, shot on location, looks great. But the lack of energy and lethargic pacing are the most serious flaws. It's engaging enough, but the constant tonal shifts sometimes disjoint what should have been a seamless narrative.
