A jaded cop ( John Turturro) and the reporter try to figure it all out. They don't, but a flashback lets us in on the scoop. The subsequent flashback scenes, in the only full-on battle we'll see, the buffalo soldiers slosh through a Tuscan river while a Nazi truck blasts the voice of Axis Sally, the German counterpart of Tokyo Rose, to entice them to surrender. Here, and in the following scenes wherein the Nazis machine-gun an entire village, Lee shows the shocking reality of war by shoving the horrors in our face.
When the carnage is over only four men are left: We then follow the earnest leader Staff Sgt. Aubrey Stamps (Luke), smooth-talking Sgt. Bishop Cummings (Ealy), Puerto Rican translator Cpl. Hector Negron (Alonso) and the sweet, simple and superstitious Train (Omar Benson Miller) as a "Chocolate Giant."
Train carries around an Italian bust, which he lugs everywhere because he swears it's good luck. The gorgeous Renata (Valentina Cervi) comes between two sergeants, the straight-arrow Stamps (Derek Luke) and the swaggering Bishop (Michael Ealy). The Puerto Rican Hector (Laz Alonso) operates the radio and translates.
