Calgary's penchant for unpretentious comfort food has been well documented on this site and others. Thus, a new burger joint opening across from the Stampede Grounds is really no surprise. What is surprising, however, is that this so-called burger spot, Loungeburger, is actually one of the more upscale, cachet-filled hotspots in the city. Yes, that's right, a trendy hipster lounge that deals primarily in meat patties.

Let's get one thing straight – Loungeburger isn't a diner or a greasy spoon. The music is loud, the décor is sleek, and the place is buzzing with energy. You'd expect the glossed up patrons to be holding colourful cocktails, and some of them are, but you're just as likely to see a pair of carefully manicured hands wrapped around a big juicy burger. This being Calgary, however, the lounge side is covered in televisions, blasting the Flames or the Stampeders if they're on, anything else sports related if they're not.

But "lounge" is only half the name. The other half is "burger", but that's hardly proportional to the burger worship going on there. Some spots will offer a beef burger, veggie burger, and chicken burger and call it a good selection. Loungeburger offers 15 of its own creations, plus a build-your-own menu with 14 choices of patties, six types of buns, 19 vegetables, eight types of cheese, eight additional meat toppings, and 23 sauces. Now, I can't do that math (I have an English degree, naturally), but that's one wackload of options.

Burgers start at $10 (Butters Organic Beef with Blue Cheese and Caramelized Pears on a Kaiser Bun) and go all the way up to the already infamous $40 Lounger (Kobe Wagyu topped with Prosciutto-wrapped Lobster, Chives, and Truffle Hollandaise on a Pretzel Bun). Just to name a few of the patty options, you've got varieties of Bison, Elk, Lamb, Sausage, Smoked Chicken, Free-Range Turkey, Ahi Tuna, Pacific Salmon, and Tiger Shrimp. Factor in the other variables, and you have lunch for the next few years. Better get started now.

I went for lunch today. I had the Elk Burger, and orderded double smoked bacon on the side. My wife had the special of the day Panko-crusted Crab cake burger. We shared a Calamari appetizer.

The Calamri's flavouring was great. Just the right amount of breading and lemon flavour, this item could have been really tasty. The only thing wrong with it was that it was overcooked the the point of hard, not just rubbery. We both joked that it made us want to gag. We did not finish this item. The server was good enough to not charge us for it, so kudos to her, she defintely earned her tip. Altough, she didn't really seemed suprized when she saw the unfinished food.

My Elk burger was ok, very dry, cooked for too long. My bacon came on the side as was as cold as the silverware. The cooks today must have either stayed out too late last night, or are just bad cooks. My fries were good though, but not seasoned enough.

The speacial crab burger was maybe a better idea in theory than in practice. The side soup ordered with this item was also not hot enough.

Loungeburger is perhaps better experienced while you are drinking heavily or drunk. We wanted to stop in for a quick burger but waited too long for sub bar food for what we paid for. Next time we will go to The Burger Inn. We will not be returning.

I had a few burgers here and they were all okay, a bit too oily, greasy, and FAT. The flavor is not worth the heart attack.

    The service is nice =)

Burger and beer bonanza! A much needed addition to the the Saddledome area... Loungeburger offers a great pre/post game meeting spot for some mind-blowing burgers. Great lounge atmosphere with half of the space set up as a bar/lounge with plenty of flat screens and beers on tap and the other half a dimly lit restaurant with intimate booths. Tried both the AAA beef burger and the smoked chicken burger and was delighted with both. The garlic fries were cold and limp, but the onion rings were great. No fresh ground pepper available, but the decent prices and great selection of appetizers and fixings made up for it. I'll be back soon.
