e spent the summer backpacking through Europe, trite but naïve. During the days he would explore churches and stand in sweating lines, while nights would find him testing the American-girls-are-easy cliché in drunken hostel bars and in squares of posturing tourists. He would never admit to epiphany, but on a hungover morning, as a French train jolted into a southern station, things changed.
It started simply. As he looked about the second class car, cramped with commuters and travelers, he spied a girl wearing the same brand of backpack as himself. Simultaneously, he heard the two rough Australians behind him having a familiar, self-congratulatory conversation about their resilience in their time of temporary faux-poverty. As he noticed a Frenchman sneering at an elderly American couple as they loudly proclaimed, “the thing about Europe is,” he could bear no more. The carriage became suddenly claustrophobic as he arose, forgetting his backpack, fighting through the aisle of French commuters. He needed not just respite, but escape. The closest doors, haunted by mid-morning washroom funk, shuttered open as he jumped to the platform. Running through the station, impeded at every turn by the slow walk of the reluctant worker, a faint aroma of espresso stroked his nose. He came to the exit, calming but still frantic. But as the slight, warm French wind finally reached him, all became serene. He knew what he must do: move to Calgary and open a café. He whispered softly, “Thank you, La Breeze.” - S.T.

2 Reader Reviews | This restaurant - La Brezza in Bridgeland - and it's proprietor thrive off of location and are in the business of scamming any poor victim who dines there. I can't put into words how terrible the food and wine and service were, and any review you read that says it's good is a review written by the scumbag owner. I've sent out emails to all my friends to warn them and the response has been incredible - ALL BAD.
It is very overpriced and you will be lucky not to leave sick. I started off with the worst wine I had ever tasted, our bread was forgotten, no water served, the table was wobbly, and it was cold - all very mediocre at best. The salad was out of a bag, the 'prawns' were large shrimp, and they used CANNED mushrooms and gravy mix to top my paper thin bland D-grade chicken breast. The tomato sauce on my penne was definately tomato sauce out of a can, and I hardly touched the strange cream/egg mouse attempt at dessert. I had to leave practically everything untouched and they did nothing about it even when I questioned the canned mushrooms and bad chicken. I left feeling robbed, and slightly nauseous (i should sue!), and it sure didn't feel Italian. All is not lost if I can spare others from a horrible dining experience. I hope you forward this to others so they don't make the mistake of ever going there.
