Gunkan may not be the most pleasant name for a restaurant, but get past the unfortunate moniker and you’ll discover yet another sushi bar providing Calgary natives with the raw fish goods. One meal here and you’ll start to wonder why people started to cook things in the first place (silly cavemen).

The actual definition of Gunkan is sushi that is wrapped in nori and topped with roe (see much more appetizing than it initially appeared). But that’s not to say that this place specializes in that lone form of sushi. Far from it, there are also avocado rolls, Rainbow Rolls, Dynamite Rolls, Kamakachi Rolls each play a part in surprising and delighting the diner from one bite to the next.

Udon needs a bit of fine-tuning. But sloppy bowls of red-orange shrimp tempura, deep green seaweed, stark white udon noodles are inexpensive, and – if you're not anticipating fancy fare – is serviceable at best

Standbys include the California Roll (made with imitation crab, cucumber and avocado); Shrimp Tempura Roll (shrimp tempura, crab, cucumber and avocado); Salmon Skin Roll (salmon skin, cucumber, gobo roots, radish sprouts and dried fish), and the tuna roll with raw tuna.

Frankly, if you can think of a Japanese dish with fish that isn’t cooked, chances are they’ll serve it up here. If you’re looking for traditional and well-prepared sushi, look no further. Gunkan is owned and operated by the Chu family of six who have recently moved to Calgary from Hong Kong. You can actually taste the care and effort that the Chu’s put into each sushi roll. As for the space, don't get excited. In a space that was an abandoned bar, simple, polished wood tables and chairs are pretty much it.

Visited for the first time but it could be the last. The food was fair but the service was upsetting. The young waitress sure needs her service skill brushed up and opens her eyes and world to see how others serve!
That young waitress was good in upsetting customers by saying: “We don’t have this, come early next time” (hmm, is it not easy to say “sorry, it’s sold out, PLEASE come and try next time”??) Then we tired to order another dish from the menu, then she went, “We don’t have this either”, okay, finally we ordered 3 dishes, $40 worth of food between the two of us, and she asked, “Just the 3??!” Eh, a dinner set, an order of sushi pizza, and a bowl of udon would not be enough for 2 average sized people, that told me that your food portion was going to be small?!
It does not matter how hard you advertise your restaurant on paid advertisement, bad servers would help you to sweep away your customers and spread the words on unpleasant experience.

Having heard the hype, great food, fiar prices, newly renovated. Only ones when we arrived on a Tuesday so thought service would be great. Sat for about 10 minutes while they chatted with each other. Ordered a variety to see what was what on the menu. Sunomono had the darkest spicy broth unlike anything I have tasted, which was not a pleasent experience. The sushie when it came was either partly frozen or overly warm or full of water. #$3 for one can of pop??? I think they need to reconsider what they are doing.

I think Gunkan is great. Try the Salmon sashimi. Freshest Salmon I have tasted in Calgary ever. And their tempura is absolutely crisp and fresh.
I am so delighted to have a decent clean restaurant in our end of town.
    They have just recently renovated.

It's great that we have another great sushi restaurant in Calgary. I'll give Gunkan a 3Star this time, to give them a space for improvement.

Needs a bit of fine-tuning? Yes, indeed, Gunkan needs to be completely fine tuned. Nice atempt, but food needs a bit of care.

A little rough on the edges, my friend. Sushi's okay, but not worth the trip.
