  • Get Smart

    June 19, 2008 - Aaron Jacobs
He teams with Agent 99 - who is not at risk because she recently had plastic surgery to change her appearance - and heads to Russia to retaliate and snuff out the enemy's plans to release nukes worldwide. Somehow, they all end up in L.A. where Stamp plans to blow up the president, played by James Caan.

The heroes are armed with endless gadgets, including a pocket knife with a flamethrower and harpoon gun, but their greatest weapons are the convenient contrivances of a lukewarm script.
Carrell is a master at layering stiff, deadpan dignity on top of ineptitude, which is the perfect mix of attributes for the would-be superspy. As for Hathaway, she's a revelation. With her chic Chanel-like duds and confident verbal delivery, she's able to show more edge than her previous goody-goody roles have allowed. Bill Murray plays Agent 13, hiding in a tree. He's wonderful in his one lonely scene. Also, Arkin's Chief lightens the load.

Get Smart is written by Tom J. Astle (Failure to Launch) and Matt Ember and directed by Peter Segal (50 First Dates and Anger Management). While Mel Brooks and Buck Henry's original TV show was a parody of the James Bond films, with their fancy gadgets and Cold War villains, this resurection is action movie and spoof and, though it's often a little unbalanced, the ultimate result is a harmlessly entertaining picture.
