    Review by Jennifer Toole

The drink menu is worldly as well. There are 101 wines on the wine list and 101 beers on the beer list. See a theme here? A pint of Guatemala Famosa ($5.77), Slovakia Golden Pheasant (8.57) or South Africa Castle Lager ($5.77) will probably taste the same as every other beer, but at least you’ll feel more, shall we say, cultured.

Mike Ritchie opened up Flight Deck with the help of over forty of his fellow West Jet comrades who were kind enough to invest. I would imagine that being a pilot would make a person crave a home base – a warm place to have a good meal, a pint and a game of soccer on the TV.

Mike has succeeded in this enterprise although he must be expecting everyone he knows to show up every night of the week, because the place is huge. It seats 440 people indoors and is fitted with over 100 TV screens, not one of which is on the arrivals and departures out of Calgary International. The size of the place makes Flight Deck feel like an airplane hangar. With a little more help from the designer, Flight Deck could be turned into something special.

I have been there 3 times now. I keep trying it and trying it. I am done, the food is very low quality. The atmosphere is nice but really not enough to go back. The menus all 3 times were covered in dried food and drink. The prices are good and the wine list is excellant if they have what you want. There is nothing that makes this place stand out food wise and its really really not good food.

Went there last nite to have something to eat on the outside deck. There was room outside but bizarely enough all chairs on the patio were broken!..The response by the staff was " sit in two chairs on top of each other so you won't fall backwards! No thanks, we opted to leave. As we left, we told the downstairs staff why we we leaving. Their response was " thanks for leaving". Thanks for being grateful Flight Deck. See ya sometime. jean

I've eaten at the Flight Deck a few times now, and the only word I can think of to describe it is "inconsistent."

The first time we tried to make a reservation, but we were told that they weren't taking them yet. We didn't have the required 45 minutes to wait around that night. The next time we went, the food (steaks, scallops and a chicken burger for the eleven year old we had in tow) was incredible and the service was outstanding. Visit number three (which, I guess, is visit number two) was to the bar upstairs. The pub fare was tasty, our server was a sweetie pie and we were thoroughly entertained by the diverse clientele. The last time we went, our poor server looked terrified, she was run off her feet, and we watched tables walk out because food just wasn't coming. Could the honeymoon be over?

We both ordered their curry bowl, which was the oddest thing I've ever tried to eat- picture a steak sandwich steak (complete with Montreal steak spice) sliced up over top of an odd assortment of vegetables with a sad, sad attempt at a curry sauce on a mountain of white rice. The manager was happy to replace it with pizza, which was pretty good. We're going to give it another chance, to see if the schizophrenia has been resolved. I'm still looking forward to giving their patio a try.
