estaurants and bistros are old news; if you're all about trying the best there is to offer, tasting kitchens are the only way to go. For many the concept is still unfamiliar, but for many dedicated foodies tasting kitchens are like Church. A good dish at a fancy restaurant typically involves a delicate mix of many constituent elements to create an intricately unified whole. While this can be amazing if done right, it takes attention away from the rudimentary ingredients. The idea at FARM is to showcase the essentials in their own right.
The eatery is the brainchild of Janice Beaton. As the owner of Janice Beaton Fine Cheese Shop, which is attached to FARM, she knows a thing or two about the philosophy of fine artisan foods. The place delights in pairing meats with cheeses, breads, and fancy condiments. By pairing the items together, the eatery intends to bring out the flavour of each individual piece and present them in all their aficionado-fodder glory. Head Chef Adam O'Brien (formerly of River Café) along with consulting chef Michael Noble have created a menu that will suggest the most appropriate food pairings for the amateur connoisseur.
The cheese, naturally, comes from Beaton's tethered cheese shop, while the selections of meats and vegetables are supplemented every day. Of course, there's no enjoying fine meat and cheese without a good vintage. That will be the domain of wine director Stephanie Chiasson. The foods offered will change based on what's fresh and what's in season, so the selection is almost endless and the helpful staff will keep you abreast of what goes with what.
As you might expect, tasting is a social experience. FARM has been designed with this in mind. The 43 seat farmhouse features a 12 foot-long Harvest table for community seating, a central open kitchen, and tables along a long banquette. After all, why compare fine foods if you have no one to compare them with? Your best bet is to pull up next to someone who looks like they know what they're doing and ask them for guidance. In fact, that's just good life advice.
If you're looking for a full-course meal, this isn't the place, but if you're looking for a unique dining experience, you can't go wrong. Try "The Cutting Board", essentially a charcuterie that you create yourself. Select from the ever-changing list of fine cheeses and meats and they will build you a sampler served on a giant wooden slab, complete with sliced baguette and homemade condiments.

10 Reader Reviews | I really don't understand why the other reviews say that this place is pricey?!? I have been a few times and have thought the opposite. The features are well worth the money and the entrees on the menu do not exceed $12. A note to the people who believe that this restaurant is expensive, where do you usually dine? Tubby Dog:)
Love this place and will go back time and time again.........

You get what you pay for! Great food, most local and organic, prepared simply so the quality of the ingredients shine through. Sat at the bar and had a chat with the chef who filled me in on other places off the beaten path in Calgary. Well worth the money!

Excellent service, knowledgeable staff, and an interesting concept. Is nice for a light quick lunch, or for an unpretentious wine and cheese. It is a little on the pricey side though, good for a first date kinda place.

love the ambience, fun lunch spot, sort of European, the duck confit was amazing with an arugula salad, toasted apple chips and hazelnut. My husband's mac and cheese was great comfort food, might be nice to have a bit more toasted bread crumbs on top though. knowledgeable and available service. will go back late nights some time, for a glass of wine and the cheese boards with friends.

The decor in this place is absolutely adorable! It was for sure the first thing that made me feel comfortable, then the one wall being a chalk board listing their specials for the day, a great idea, not to mention their amazing menu. It caught my eye walking by, I just had a wine and cheese taste, but the mixture of it was great, with the added atmosphere! Loved it, recommend it for sure:)

This is hands down my absolute favorite restaurant in Calgary. The prix-fixe is priced very reasonably and every course is great. The charcuterie plate is a favourite. The service is great, the decor is tasteful and the wine selection could use some work.

Very mediocre offerings. I gave it a 3 stars because the ambiance is nice. Very disappointed overall.

I have to strongly disagree with Mr. McCaskill's review. Farm is a great place to enjoy fine food and wine at a reasonable price. It has a warm and relaxed atmosphere which keeps me going back.
Hey jeff, maybe you should stick to the value meal menu at Mcdonalds:)

Interesting concept - great wine - knowledgeable and personable servers. Way overpriced for what you get though. I wouldn't go back.
