  • Capriccio

Family and food are two of the most important ingredients in Italian culture, so it’s only natural that they go together like spaghetti and meatballs. Calgary’s newest culinary edition, Capriccio, is a fresh incarnation of the tried-and-true family-owned Italian restaurant. Manager Vincenzo Izzo can be seen schmoozing with customers while his daughter, Sara, seats people; even his granddaughter, Maria Elena, pours water and busses tables. The love of family is felt all through the place and helps create a warm, comfortable atmosphere.

The location was the Vagabondo Restaurant for thirteen years before the Izzos moved in. Slight, decorative renovations were done to the 54-seat dining room. Fresh new tablecloths and curtains make the room look crisp and new. Wall decorations and bronze napkins add a bit of ambiance to the fresh feel. The real work was done on the kitchen, which is brand spanking new. Chef Salvatore Velotti (Da Paolo Ristorante) had a clean slate to create the menu from and he didn’t disappoint.

Velotti makes everything he can from scratch from the tomato sauce to the lasagna. It is the homemade aspect that makes Capriccio a dinner destination because the menu is exactly what you’d expect from a family-run Italian eatery. Velotti’s touch gives that loved quality to the food that emanates throughout the place. If you’re looking for a standout menu choice that will leave you satisfied and back for dinner the following week, try the osso bucco. This succulent, slow cooked veal shank simply falls off the bone. Enough said.

Vincenzo is a busy man being The Cappuccino King and all. Izzo owns and runs the popular Cappuccino King empire with his son Peter. He was the landlord of the Vagabondo location and decided not to scoff at opportunity when the aging restaurant folded.

Capriccio does home-cooked Italian to die for. Bring your family, soak up the love (and the fresh tomato sauce) and don’t forget to have an espresso at the end of your meal. Izzo is the King, after all. –J.T.

My husband and I live way up in the south. We heard of Capriccio resturant through friends and were hesitant to make the drive but gave it try one night. We phoned to make a reservation and were told by the owner you normally need a reservation on Thurs. Fri. and Saturday, and closed on Sundays. So we booked on a Friday. We have since returned 3 more times since the original booking, and are looking forward to many many more great meals...well worth the drive! We have refered quite a few friends and family, all who have had the same all around great service, fantastic meal, and comfortable atmosphere! We will see you soon Capriccio!!!!!

We have eaten there twice and would eat there again. We found the atmosphere to be very relaxing...an at home type of feeling. Our waiter seemed to be there at just the right time, he seemed to know when we needed something. The food was delightful, and there was lots of it. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend our friends.

Had a meal at Capriccio; it was good but the service needs work.
People seemed nice, and I like to try to help local small business, so I gave them extremely low rates when they requested advertising in area community newsletters. They stiffed me, won't return calls or emails. I have serious concerns about their integrity.

My family wanted to try Capriccio and support local business, we have tried on numerous occasions and have found the restaurant closed at various times of the day?? I tried to get a reservation for Father's day, the phone was never answered and my message was never returned!! After 3 failed attempts at dining here, I give up!! This is no way to run a business - shame on you!!!

My husband and I found the food and service "VERY" disappointing. We go out to dinner almost every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. We love Italian food. One of our favorite Italian restaurants was Lambardo's on Edmonton trail. Capriccio does not hold a candle to Lambardo's or Villa Ferenz. We were told by the waiter that there was a new chef and the menu was printed on a sheet of paper. The waiter got our order wrong; he was also so busy that he did not have time for us. I had the veal marsala dish; I could not taste any marsala.....I have had many marsala dishes. May husband had the chicken dish and it was very dry. It is very disappointing when you go out for a romantic dinner and you are rushed through the meal and the meal is so, so. We do not plan to return to Capriccio.
