he home of this quasi-Mexican parlor, though still in the land of Ikea and Fatburger, is worlds away from the Deerfoot Meadows neighbourhood that it occupies. The plates are substantially large, the food serviceable, and the service, well, iffy.
A simply adorned décor gives off a rustic, open, welcoming feel. Avocado, divided into a small lounge and main dining room (pit and fruit), has appropriately avocado-coloured booths and banquettes. The general aesthetics may sound drab on paper, but in person, it's quite playful (though slightly lacking in the soul department).
The Mexican menu, with staples like chicken wings, quesadillas, piles of greasy-good nachos, and a kicky quartet of burrito choices, is predictable but mostly tasty. It's all the more appealing when it's midnight, you're buzzing on "super premium" margaritas, and you need to shove some tasty calories down your pie-hole, pronto.
Try the burrito with Spicy Chicken ($14) tricked up with plump refried pinto beans, guacamole, greens and a medium-heat salsa that combines the brightness of tomatillo with the spark of green-chili heat and the fresh jolt of cilantro. About the only thing wrong with the burrito is the firm, rubbery flour tortilla, which poses an antagonizing barrier between mouth and succulent mixings.
I've since tried the other burrito combinations. Only the Marinated Sirloin, with its full range of seasoning, including garlic and cumin, approached the delectability of the Spicy Chicken. Also, the Marinated Pork, though chewier and not so spicy, is not bad at all, while the Vegetarian is dry and lackluster.

36 Reader Reviews | Have been here countless times. We have small kids so we usually do take out. The food is almost always excellent, I haven't had any bad expreriences with the staff. One thing that is awsemome is after all this time, they never have screwed up our takeout order yet. I have been disapointed by so many restaurants doing this in the last few years.

Too much money for amount of food served. The beef burrito that was second menu item had way too much of a drippy, mayo tasting sauce. It was also cold. No Mexican restauant would serve what they did. the posale was ok. Service was ok. Would not go back again because of the taste of the entrees for two of us.

Seated promptly, but our seats& table had crumbs on them. The waitress was not very polite, and didn't know what soup to start meant. She checked in on us once after we got our food, and it really seemed like she felt it was an imposition to do so.
Food was alright. I love the posole soup and sweet potato fries. I asked for the salsa in my wrap to be on the side. It did not come& the waitress told me that it wasn't made with salsa in the first place, even though it said so on the menu.
The atmosphere was alright. None of the waitresses seemed very happy to be there, and the movie they had projected on the wall was on the "play movie" screen for several minutes.
I'm not sure if I would go back, just because it really isn't worth the money. The service and amount of food that you receive is just not worth the cost.

I went there with the expectation of eating "mexican" food... while is not mexican at all, but it is tex mex like... food is ok... I had a traditional soup, very common in Mexico, should be quite spicy and tasty at least... Pozole Soup, which should be made with corn kernels... the big ones (you can find them in latin or mexican food stores around town), well instead I got sweet canned corn with sweet kidney beans, tomatoes, and other stuff is not supposed to be there.... am not saying that soup was bad, taste was ok, more like what you ca find anywhere else, but if a place says they do have "mexican" food and the menu has items that they don't even know... I'd suggest to change name at leat (to that soup) or look up for the recipe online!!

Our family has visited this restaurant 4 times recently. the first time was excellent...even my young daughter ate most of her kids meal!! We all loved the sweet potato fries! Second time, it was okay and good enough for us to return. third time...daughter loved hers, son thought his was okay, I didn't like mine at all BUT we returned for one more visit. After eating half of my salad, I discovered extra protein in it...a live, crawling beetle! The manager was apologetic and paid for our meal (bless his heart) but we won't be returning anytime soon. The service on all four visits was really not good and the waitresses made me feel like I was imposing on them!

We were a group of 10 and called to make reservations a few days in advanced. Were told no lunch reservations taken so we should arrive by 1130. We arrived at 1130 and were very abruptly told that we should have made reservations - tried to explain that we called ... but manager didn't want to hear it. Did not attept to accomodate our group. Food was OK - but took ages to arrive. Waitress was very rude. Very noisey atmosphere. Would not go again (in a small or large group).

Waiting time for a seat is short but service overall is satisfactory at best. The sweet potato fries are delicious and can be ordered with most entrees. Chicken burrito is quite tasty and the fajitas aren't too bad either.

My boyfriend and I have heard so many stories about avocados so we decided to check it out. We were seated quickly... at first our server seemed really nice.. later on our drink were never refilled and everytime we tried to grab her attention she was always found on the phone... when we wanted to pay the bill she was nowhere to be found. We walked out of there and we saw her smoking next to the restaurant. I must say the food was good but the service was horrible.

Went there last week and will definitely go back - food tasted fresh and yummy. I liked the fact that the menu wasn't extensive so it didn't take me forever to decide what I wanted. Service was fast and friendly. It's not a huge restaurant so the kitchen doesn't get backed up.

Where to start, Monday lunch what a laught...this young kid in all black picked up a dirty napkin by the bar and wiped down the table of four beside me....I ordered with Sweet potato fries and the kitchen thought It would be ok to put on chips instead...
Cost, to hight...Value...still tasting after all this time...
One good point though...some mighty fine chics go their...

Extremely disappointing, especially when the bill comes to more than $65, no alcohol was drunk and three people are still hungry.
The snotty host sat us at a non descript table, with MTV blazing on one wall and miscellaneous baseball on another - distracting enough without the weird echoes coming from various parts of the restaurant and the "beep beep beep" of some kitchen appliance every other minute. We asked for a soup to start, to share and then their "famous" burritos. The soup did not come to start. In fact it threatend to not come at all, we had to ask for it. And then it was plopped down, along with our main course, with such ill-grace (same snotty host) and with nary an apology, that I was tempted to send it back. I really wish I had once we tasted the soup and discovered it to be cold. Awful. The burritos were fine - for what they were - but cost twice as much as they were worth since I can get the same dish (called a "wrap") from just about any deli in the city for $5 ($9 less than this place).
Upshot is: don't waste your money or your time. It was in no way a pleasurable experience. This may be the result of Calgary's short staffing, but this 'dining experience' is one that deserves to go out of business.

Wow, this place is my new favorite place to eat! Too bad there aren't more locations in the city! My favorite thing is the Ranchero Burrito and the sweet potato fries. It's only been open about a year I think and I went there once at the beginning. Since then it's way better. Great place to go for a beer and nachos after shopping at Ikea!

Hi. The food was Great, I had their Ranchero Burrito (wow). My wife had the fiesta Salad and loved it. This place is not your traditional mexican restaurant. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants something different then rice and beans on their plate.

Seated promptly - check...the rest of the dinner was downhill from there. The waitress mixed up my order, told chef and plopped salad in front of me with the main missing and not as so much as a sorry. We got the bill which was way over priced and feel like I could have just went to Tacotime and felt more satisfied.

Have been twice. Was seated promptly.
Menu eclecticc. Not real Mexican, more fusion and adapted to modern times.
I loved the tomato bean tortilla soup. Came back for a second taste. One can get it meal sized or 1/2'd.
Chips were Ok and salsa was good, more like pico de gallo.
Burritos not particularly memorable, other than the fillings, especially meat were skimpey.
Avocado salad with raisins and walnuts was not one of those "I have to have it again" entrees. However, walnuts are very fresh and not bitter!
They only have one kind of coffee. A Mexican blend. I think they just make expresso and add hot water like cafe americano. It costs $2.50 and there are no refills. There should be another option for coffee and they should have decaf.
The sweet potatoe fries are delicious.
The soup and the fries will bring me back when I am in the area!
