Avenue diner prides themselves on their delicious breakfast-style comfort food. They offer a wide selection of menu items, so those of you who dislike eggs (like me) are in luck.
Whole grain pancakes with Canadian maple syrup costs $9.25, while a seasonal fruit bowl is $5.25. The offer various salads such as a Spinach salad with spiced pecans, sun dried cranberries, and vanilla-apple dressing. Sounds weird, I know, but give it a try. They also offer sandwiches, such as the Grilled buffalo burger with cheddar ($11.95) or the Salmon club with Cappicolla and roasted red pepper cream cheese ($12.95). Of course, they still have the typical omelettes, and original tasty-sounding ones as well such as the wild mushroom, spinach, and white cheddar omelette.
The restaurant is comfy-chic, and lined with soft booths that suck you into their plush fabric. Above the booths, festive horns add to the natural look, with the opposite wall featuring exposed brick. The lighting is soft, accentuating the classy and deep mahogany floors.
Avenue states that their diner is 33% love, 33% passion for excellence, and 33% hard work. All of this adds up to a very classy and comfy restaurant for prime-time lounging. My only question is, what happened to the last 1%? –S.B.

I took my mom and a good friend to the diner assuring them that the food was wonderful despite the fact that we had to park downtown. We ordered and were forgotten about by our waitress (no coffee or water refills for the duration of our stay), we then received our food. which we started eating and when the waitress came along and asked how our meal was we replied that it was "fine". My chef friend and i took one more bite each and decided that we were not crazy and indeed the burger and salmon were both charcoal and sent them back to the kitchen. We had only eaten half a sandwich each so decided to share an eggs benedict, before we got the bene a woman (i assume was the manager) came over and told us "because we ate half of the charcoal we MUST pay for the charcoal but they would not charge us for the bene????? I am not sure the logic in this.......charge for the crap food they sent out but not the other crap food we actually ate. As it turns out the bene was likely the WORST i have ever eaten AND they charged us almost 20$ for it to boot!!!!!! Anyways when we tried to dispute this with the "manager" she told us it was their policy because we ate half our shitty meal that they allowed to leave their kitchen that we MUST pay for the entire thing!!!! She was arguing in front of the entire counter of customers they had and shouting in my girlfriend's face, making it seem as though WE were trying to screw them into giving us free food.
It was an embarrasing and altogether unpleasant dining experience and I will NEVER go back.
I sugggest that all of you follow my lead as they do not deserve the business that they get every day when they treat customers like this!!!

What could have been a great brunch ended as a disaster as the owner was forcing us out and to finish quickly because she got a line and would like to serve them, instead of us enjoying our time with friends. I have been to many restaurants around the world this has to be the worse treatment I ever received! Simply, Do NOT go.

If you have small children and are looking for a good place to have breakfast with your family, this is NOT the right one. The food is good and most of the staff is friendly. In fact, I considered myself a frequent client at this restaurant and every time I had a chance I would take family and friends there. Never again. This morning I took my in-laws visiting from abroad for breakfast. I have a 17-month-old son and as every toddler that age, he has the tendency to be a bit noisy, talk loud and try to get attention. Since the beginning, we noticed that one member of the staff was not very happy to have him there. She tried being subtle at first by making faces every time he was a bit loud.
If you have children you will know how when someone is not nice towards your child it hurts you even more than if they were not nice to you. By the end of our meal my son wanted to get off his high chair, was standing by my side and sat on the floor by the hall. Then the same "unfriendly" person asked me to move him right away because he was in her way. I understood that he was in the way and wanted to move him without him making scene but she did not give me time and repeatedly and rudely asked me to move him. When I told her we were about to leave she kept on insisting. Obviously this person doesn't have kids, I thought, and has no idea on how to talk to the customers. I told her she didn't need to be so rude but she kept on going on and on. Her attitude surprised me and so I asked her name (I thought the manager would like to talk to her about being compassionate and understanding) but to my surprise, her response was "Heather Chell, and if you want to talk to the manager, that's me, and if you want to talk to the owner, that's me". I was so shocked by this that I could say nothing else but leave and make sure that I would never come back there again. I am writing this because I was shocked by the lack of tolerance she showed with my son. If you have a baby/toddler and want him to be treated right, please go somewhere else.

The Avenue Diner in Calgary is a must for any brunch lover.
We ate there recently, when in town for a wedding.
I ordered eggs "over hard", and the kicthen still managed to produce a fluffy, delectable set of eggs. The hot chocolate is a dream - comfortable glass cups filled with piping hot cocoa, whipped cream and shaved Callebaut chocolate. A truly Calgarian experience.
Organic, locally grown foods are a theme at the Avenue. The fresh tomatoes (which our server gladly swapped for the potatoes that usually accompany the eggs and sausage) were juicy, red and flavourful - the way tomatoes are meant to be.
I enjoyed the Avenue so much that I returned (alone) and ate the same breakfast the next morning. There is bar stool seating - perfect if your wedding compadres are too hung over to revisit the Avenue Diner on a Sunday morning.
