W e North Americans have taken every kind of global cuisine we could get our hands on and turned it into fast food. Think Chinese take-out, the sushi trend, pizza parlours on every corner and pad Thai to go. It was only a matter of time before we ventured into the Middle East and stole their cuisine along with their lives and general peace of mind.
Aamu Kebab and Donair is a new-ish Afghan eatery in the Interpacific Business Park. Owner Assadullah Askar cooks up a simple Afghani feast buffet-style that just reeks with saffron. Stews, kabobs and sliced donair make up the majority of the selections. Mantoos, tasty little beef dumplings, are served as well.
Don’t be afraid of the spice factor. Unlike other types of Middle Eastern cuisine, Afghani food isn’t exceedingly hot. It’s about time we all understood a little more about what’s going on across the ocean and what better way to start than through food? –J.T.
