his quaint café’s history is truly the most interesting part about it. In 1886, the building was used as the office of the Eau Clair and a lumber company. They survived many changes throughout the years, but have maintained the old-fashioned historical roots.
Open only for breakfast and lunch, they make sure they stuff you full so you don’t’ even need dinner. Hearty eggs ‘n’ bacon, sandwiches, and chili are all good choices. Be sure to scarf down your food, since they’re only open until 3pm daily.

2 Reader Reviews | Breakfast at 1886 has been consistently excellent for the past 20 years. You do not to choose 1886 as your regular breakfast stop as you would quickly suffer from weight gain and, yes, clogged arteries. But as an occasional sinful indulgence, or a place to bring out of towners for an impressive feast, this is the one and only restaurant I will attend. The barometer for an excellent breakfast is the hashbrowns; at 1886 they are beautifully seasoned, perfectly cooked and generously supplied. If you choose a classic fare, 1886 always comes through; eggs ordered over easy are exactly that. Sunnyside up? You will receive eggs matching that description. The sausages and/or bacon is always cooked to specifications. The omelettes are Oscar worth: fluffy and plump with whatever you request. Coffee at 1886 is excellent and bottomless. This brings me to the service; somehow over the last 20 years I have managed to always get a waitress who is there when I need her, polite but not syrupy sweet, and capable of offering just the right amount of conversation without becoming a nuisance. This restaurant is always packed to capacity and you may have to wait to be seated but, believe me, the wait is worth it.
To top it off, you can go for a long walk at Princess Island to walk off that great, greasy, spicy, tasty breakfast.

We were so excited to have a traditional country style breakfast....but after our overly burnt coffee was served I was getting a little nervous.....My omlette (mushroom/bacon) arrived lukewarm and tasteless as did my partners sunnyside up eggs, bacon and hashbrowns. The only thing he could taste was all the pepper they put in the hashbrowns, did anyone ask how anything was or even bothered to appear at our table again...No... just to drop off the bill which was the worst $27 breakfast we have had! Thank goodness for the Galaxie we will never stray again...
