hat many Manhattanites have deemed the “longest hotel renovation – EVER” is finally rewarded with the anticipated opening of Jason Pomeranc’s Thompson Hotel on Oct.1st.
Accordingly named after the address, this boutique hotel features a ‘60s modernist (i.e. MOD cool vs. Austin Power’s cheese) interior designed by Steven Sclaroff with almost 90 guest rooms and suites and a plasma TV in each. They also feature an I-Pod docking station, which seems to be all the rage in hotels lately. In terms of price, the least expensive runs around $450 for a pod room, while a king suite will cost an arm and a leg- $1050. Once you’ve seen the actual hotel and the luxuriousness it offers, you may not be dismissing the prices so quickly.
As for the décor palette, a deep blue, midnight black, crisp white and teak wood paneling accents are all prevalent colors from the linens to the drapes. The bathrooms are a sight to see themselves, with black tiling on the walls and ultra-mod fixtures. They even offer bath amenities by Fresh, and provide gourmet snacks by Dean and Deluca and Eli Zabar’s.
The hotel resto, Blue Ribbon, will concentrate on predominantly Japanese cuisine such as sushi. You can expect the same friendly and quality service as the Thompson Soho location without that been there done that feeling. The restaurant offers sushi from Pacific and Atlantic oceans, along with products flown directly from the Sea of Japan on a regular basis. Now if that isn’t class, I don’t know what is. The décor, accordingly so, is Asian-inspired and designed by Asfour and Guzy Architects, who’ve designed all of the Blue Ribbon Restaurants. The best part? All of the 5 Blue Ribbon Restaurants have made it onto New York Magazine’s “100 Favorite Restaurants” list.
Not impressed enough? 6 Columbus also features a bi-level rooftop bar and lounge above Columbus Circle. This way, you can sit and rest in a comfy lounge chair, while sipping a martini and staring at the breathtaking view of the city. Not too shabby. –S.B.
