Z Ocean Hotel Let’s face it, the recession is boring. Massive deficits cause an even spread of money-loss across the class dividing board and suddenly we are all equals...well relative equals of course. That said, there is just no fun in equality – homeless people roam about the streets handing their paper-bagged booze to downtrodden hotel tycoons, New Orleans refugees open-up their cardboard boxes to Citibank presidents and gnaw with them on chicken bones. In other words, life is mundane when there is no new luxury to never be able to have. Thank God, then – well actually thank the IHG hotel group – for bringing to South Beach, the hedonist’s hideaway, Z Ocean Hotel. Fontainebleau take your billion dollars and stuff it, Z Ocean Hotel is going to give you a run for your money – in all of its unassumingly extravagant, boutique hotel glory.

Overstuffed and oversized are the words in the Z, which features 79 lavishly furnished rooms that span five floors. If the king sized beds and duvets - so filled with down, it’s a wonder that Donald is still around and quacking - are not enough to keep you comfortable, worry not, the hotel also offers in-room spa treatments. Imagine, warming yourself in the golden light, beaming through the floor to ceiling windows, while a stranger comes to rub out your tension and remove all your blemishes. As for the bathrooms, water shortage is certainly not an issue in these chic and versatile spaces all equipped with a glassed-in, oversized, full-body, rain shower and four wall sprays.

But for those who need to be on the top rung of the luxury ladder, the hotel also boasts nine spa suites, each over-indulging its patrons with a four person, Roman hot-tub (and we all know the Romans are the ruling kings of hedonism) on the balcony, as well as 27 rooftop terrace suites, each featuring a spiral staircase leading to a 600-square-foot private, terrace outfitted with a Roman hot tub, wet bar, dining area, and a wicker lounging bed.

Plebes who don’t splurge for the private tubs, save the heartache, you too can bathe like a Roman at the hot tub on the Lanai deck. This more than functional, private pool area offers all guests a chance to soak or swim in the glass-bottom pool and enjoy the mosaic waterfalls. For guests that prefer to chill beachside, Z Ocean also has a private beach club, offering food and beverages, towel, lounge chair and umbrella services.

Z Ocean does not let its guests forget for one moment that they are in the center of spoiled rotten South Beach. The hotel thus offers VIP access to all clubs on the strip as well as access (in that it’s in the hotel) to one of the hottest restaurants in the city – Table 8. – E.H
