 As many stylish world travelers know, there can be a real stigma attached to airport hotels: if you want "scene" stay downtown; if you want convenience, stay near the airport. The owners of the brand new Acclaim Hotel in Calgary are trying to challenge that epithet with accommodations that are opportune for the traveler, but also inherently attractive to just regular old tourists. The hotel is less than two km from the airport, but the owners are hoping that isn't the only draw.
The first step was hiring an award winning architectural firm (Norr Architects Planners) and then throw a bunch of money at them (13 million dollars). The result is a hotel with all the modern features you've come to expect from a luxury hotel, but all in the service of traveling convenience. Beds are made up in 300 thread count European linen, while bathrooms boast deep soaker tubs with bath salts, and showers with cascading rain heads and 6 jet Euro Spa massage. There's also plenty of technology at work here. 42 inch flat screen TVs are built into the wires, and iPod docking stations allow you to choose your own wake up music (unfortunately you won't be making any dates with the sultry-voiced wake-up caller).
As flashy hotels are wont to do these days, Acclaim has been built with the environment in mind. Swiping your room card activates the lights (as if you couldn't just turn them off when you leave) and the heating and cooling system is based on a motion detector. But there's more of a focus on quick-travel than on green initiatives. The front desk is streamlined for quick check out, a free shuttle will take visitors to the airport or to nearby restaurants, it's free to leave your car at the hotel's lot while you travel, and arrival and departure screens are linked directly from the airport. Okay, that's actually pretty cool.
Add in a free continental breakfast and free parking while you travel, and you've got yourself a pretty convenient hotel. Throw in a rooftop lounge with outdoor hot tub, and Acclaim manages to surpass simple convenience. - R.T.
