The Greenwich HotelTriBeCa's patron saint, Robert De Niro, continues to gobble up New York square footage like the Cookie Monster's building-obsessed cousin. His latest venture, the much-talked about and occasionally contentious Greenwich Hotel, has drawn more ink than a squid fight.

With the Greenwich, De Niro added "hotelier" to his diverse Curriculum Vitae which already includes actor, director, restaurateur, and film festival founder. However, not all the news has been favorable. After introducing a gigantic penthouse space, De Niro had to face a displeased Landmarks Preservation Commission. Evidently the top floor area greatly exceeded pre-approved size limitations. Undeterred, De Niro et al have begun to make amends, seeking out a means to mollification.

Regardless of the construction squabble, the Greenwich's reputed luxury has enjoyed unimpeachable renown. Consisting of eighty eight entirely unique rooms, it is a large but un-intimidating hotel (provided you have the bank to cover the substantial per night tariff). While rooms range in size from a modest 325 square feet to over 2000 square feet they all effuse luxury, regardless of size. Look for meticulously planned spaces awash in Euro accents and touches of modernity. Though the Courtyard room is quite small, the titular attraction offers claustrophobia respite. A pair of massive two-level suites is planned for an autumn introduction, as is the controversial aforementioned Penthouse space. In the meantime, content yourself with the currently available opulent rooms.

While De Niro's name connotes New York loyalty, it also has an inherent tinge of Hollywood panache; thus the inclusion of an Ago incarnation is apropos. The world-famous restaurant gets a Manhattan home at the Greenwich. Look for vaguely familiar contemporary fare with an artistic flare. Aside from the predictably intriguing menu, the space is a major draw unto itself. High ceilings, flowing curtains, obligatory tablecloths, dark wood, and copious natural light temper the haute vibe whilst retaining a stately air. Another posh ancillary allure, the planned Shibui Spa will spread a halcyon vibe throughout a number of wood-heavy rooms.

The Greenwich Hotel continues to unveil various features, but has already drawn raves from its moneyed clientele. Naturally, reservations will be in short supply come next spring's TriBeCa Film Festival, however its stellar location, movie star pedigree, and lavish confines will make it a popular throughout the year. Save up and book in advance. -S.T.
