reated in 1871 by Art Vandelay composite, importer/exporter A.F. Gault and architect J.J. Browne, this stately and imposing Old Montreal building enjoyed an extensive 2002 renovation. Current owner, Daniel Langlois and his design team created a faux-ho loft aesthetic with exposed brick, subtle, almost minimalist, modern accoutrements, and an ever-evolving contempo Canadian art collection. 30 guest rooms over five floors range from the "Essential" to the "Loft." While the latter, at about 1000 square feet, is larger than most one bedroom apartments, the former is far from small. All rooms boast white oak flourishes, custom -made beds, ceramic showers, and internet access. Expect a chic, smoothly feng-shui-ed layout that manages to maintain an airy feel without resorting to either industrialism or Martha Stewart hominess.
The newly created Gault Restaurant offers Executive Chef Jean-Denis Doyle's fittingly contemporary menu. A tablecloth and red chair affair, Gault Restaurant is a welcome addition to the hotel's 24hr room service and light breakfast menus.
Hotel Gault has a library and conference room for business needs, an Old Montreal location that encourages cobble stone ambling, and an attentive, accommodating staff that never borders on intrusiveness. It is a boutique hotel that happily provides an alternative to typically ornate, pomp and splendour, haute lodgings. -S.T.
