f you’re a five-star hotel patron coming to Toronto, you’ll have ample selection. Slated to open between now and 2009 are the Hazelton, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and the Trump Tower. But if that doesn’t provide you with enough options for upscale accommodations, then how about the Shangri-La?
This Hong Kong brand, not unlike the others, is able to sustain itself based on its reputation. The difference is that this reputation has been largely created outside of this continent; this will only be the second Shangri-La in North America (after Vancouver). It makes sense considering Toronto’s strong ties to Asia. The design will be a glass tower that appears to twist in Toronto’s skyline.
And, like Trump, the strategy is to build it high – high enough, in fact, to become Toronto’s tallest residential building. Take that Trump! You’re fired. -R.T.
