ive different five-star hotels will be opening in Toronto in the next few years, but it’s Ritz-Carlton that has been getting the most buzz, a significant amount of which comes from its powerful branding and reputation as the luxury hotel brand in the world. It’s hard not to get caught up in the mystique of the Ritz; it’s one of the most popular choices for wealthy world travelers.
But until its 2009 Toronto opening (and subsequent Vancouver opening), the Ritz is non-existent in the Great White North (there’s a Ritz-Carlton in Montreal, but it’s separate from the well-known franchise). This deficiency has created a glut of anticipation for the Canadian edition of the brand.
The Entertainment District hotel, at 53 stories, certainly won’t be hard to miss, especially considering the five-story brightly-lit glass podium that will create a sense of interaction between the building and the street. Continuing the glass motif, each suite will have a minimum of 36 metres of floor-to-ceiling glass, and will offer incredible views of the city.
The condos start on floor 21, with a separate side entrance and two private elevators, because if you’re going to spend between $700,000 and $8 million on a condo suite, you don’t want to mix with the commoners (even if those commoners can afford to stay at a five-star hotel).
But that doesn’t mean residents won’t want to use their amenities. They will have full access to maid service and room service, including gourmet cooking. The tower’s sloping design and the five-story glass podium containing ballrooms, restaurants, and meeting facilities, make the property one of the most eagerly anticipated in the city. -R.T.
