new double-tower Four Seasons mixed-use building will open in Yorkville in 2009, and should be major competition to the nearby five-star Hazelton hotel. But the approach is different: where Hazelton goes for small and exclusive (only 9 stories and 77 suites), Four Seasons is considerably larger.
So large, in fact, that it has upset the neighbourhood residents, who don’t want skyscrapers polluting their precious Yorkville skyline. It also threatened to cast a shadow on the schoolyard of nearby Jesse Ketchum Public School, a problem that management tried to solve by throwing $2 million the school’s way. But that’s mere chump change in comparison to the $325 million the building will cost to build. Apparently Yorkvillians value their sunlight and quiet. Go figure.
The hotel/condo development will include two large towers which connect at a street level podium. In the podium will be a busy retail thoroughfare that is expected to give the area a sense of urban lift. Let’s see how much $325 million can lift. The hotel developers will fix up the Yorkville Public Library and Fire Hall no. 10 in an effort to revitalize the area of Yorkville between Yonge and Bay Street. I’d bet it also has something to do with making the neighbourhood even more attractive for high-scale clientele. -R.T.
