Hotel ChelseaWith posh boutique hotels littering the landscape of downtown New York, the Hotel Chelsea is the last of a dying breed of non-boutique hotels in the city.

This ‘last output of bohemia’ is like a slowly sinking ship, still steadily suspended by its tireless supporters – those artists and other members of the community who can see the lighthouse from the shore. Built in 1883, the Chelsea was always a fully operating hotel but is perhaps best known for its long-term residences. Janice Joplin, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith are just a few of the musical folk who once lodged here. Countless other musicians, writers and artists have, at one point or another, slept between its sheets. The hotel is unfortunately known as the spot where Sid stabbed Nancy (room 100) in 1978 and where the poet Dylan Thomas died from alcohol poisoning in 1953. It has always been a mainstay for burgeoning artists and musicians from its inception in the late nineteenth century when it opened as an artist co-operative. Since 1946, the hotel has been managed by the Bard family until recently (June 18, 2007), its board of directors ousted Managing Director Stanley Bard who took over from his father in 1955. -L.D
