ome to F. Scott and party place for Capote; retreat for Marilyn, Elizabeth and The Beatles alike; owned by the likes of Donald comb-over Trump and the Hilton family, it’s undeniable that The Plaza Hotel has proved itself to be an international landmark. The infamous Central Park kiddy-corner locale just turned one hundred years old. To mark its golden birthday it got a $450 million restorative face lift. How apropos.
The renovation was focused on rejuvenating the original detailing of the hotel while seamlessly integrating modern convenience. The hotel went from having over 800 rooms to 282 hotel rooms and 181 apartments. The Plaza’s Grand Ballroom has been restored to its original opulence with the added touches of a state of the art sound system and enhanced lighting. There is soon to be a 15,000 square foot retail space full of high-end unique shops for travelers stuck inside on cold days.
The rooms are larger this time around. They still reek of riches from the 24k gold enamel faucets to the white-gloved butler at your service. He can get to the guests even faster now that touch screens have been installed into every room. The touch screens control the lighting, the heat and call room service. There are also flat screen TVs and iPod docks for guests’ modern convenience. These added flamboyances can be had at a cost of $1000 per night for the cheapest room in the building. Expect to be rubbing shoulders with nothing but New York’s upper class.
The Oak Room, The Rose Club, The Champagne Bar and The Palm Court cater to the delicate tastes of their wealthy clients. Hell, there’s even room to blow $3500 on a magnum bottle of champers if one was having a particularly good day.
Back fresh from a three year rejuvenation period and carrying on like it opened yesterday and not in 1907, The Plaza has created legacy and longevity. In the city that never sleeps, The Plaza is an oasis of opulence. –J.T.
