he goal of any good hotel should be to make its guests feel right at home - an oasis in which to sit back, inhale deeply and kick off those pumps, at the very least. At one of Montreal’s premier destinations, Le Germain, this is clearly an understatement. Named one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies since 2002, the Groupe Germain (Hotel Germain des Pres, Hotel Dominion 1912, Le Germain) has worked tirelessly to ensure that only the highest standards are met. This upscale boutique hotel offers all of the comfort and familiarities of your own humble abode paired with a modern sophistication unrivalled by other boutique hotels in the area.
Outside, the hotel’s lobby seems like a warm, glowing oasis, a description that holds true if you are a hip business or leisure guest looking to experience a night or two in the lap of luxury. Built in the shell of an old office building, the hotel opened in 1999 to wide acclaim (the Germain’s were not exactly newcomers to the game).
Inside, a refreshingly modern decor is created by the fusion of textures in every room. Ceramic, glass, metal, contrasting light and dark woods create a sophisticated space that is softened by plush cream linens, fresh flowers and soft lighting which lends a warm ambiance as darkness sets in on the surrounding city. The hotel boasts an impressive 99 rooms including 2 executive 2-level apartment suites with wood burning fireplace and fully equipped kitchen. The peek-a-boo showers in every room make for an interesting topic of conversation and scenery that far surpasses any work of original art adoring the walls. As a guest, you are also privy to a deluxe continental breakfast, goose down duvet and pillows atop 220 thread-count sheets.
In the evening, venture down to Le G, which boasts of a staff so discrete, you’ll hardly notice them. Sip on expertly prepared martinis while you lounge in the Zen-decorated space. Nibble on tasty delicacies prepared by Chef Benjamin Lanthier whose contemporary cuisine boldly fuses exotic and sexy flavors. Some interesting selections include a roasted red onion stuffed with orzo, celery roots and brie cheese or a bread pudding brought into the 21st century with the addition of goat cheese, tomato confit and a reduction of balsamic atop a rosemary tuile.
With the operation of their hotels their raison d’etre, Christiane, Jean-Yves and Richard Germaine have certainly reaped the rewards. Taking over from their father, Victor Germaine (of Chez Victor fame) who first rose to hotelier fame with Hotel Dominion 1912, you could say that these kids have a knack for hotel management that runs deep in their veins. Here at Hotel le Germain, your wishes and relaxation truly do reign supreme. -L.D.
