If you’re the type of New York tourist who enjoys the glitz and glamour of city life, or is impressed by the ever-fashionable and multiplying New York boutique hotels, perhaps you should overlook the Inn at Irving Place. Actually, if that describes you, chances are you won’t notice it anyway. The Inn sports neither awning nor sign. The only way you’d know it is from the address. And they like it that way.
Built in 1832 as two Brownstone residences, the Inn at Irving Place has been everything from a spa to a men’s club to a speak easy, but was reimagined and renovated as a hotel in 1994. If you ignored the telephone and television, it would be easy to believe that it was still 1832. Each room is named after a famous 19th century New Yorker, such as Edith Wharton and Washington Irving, while Lady Mendl’s Tearoom serves an ornate high tea complete with fruits and crustless sandwiches.
This Inn certainly isn’t the hippest or most ‘it’ place, but it certainly is one of the most romantic. Each room features original fireplaces, rich wood furnishings, and four-poster beds. And the location, near Gramercy Park, certainly isn’t the noisiest in New York City. You’re not likely to get much street cred staying at the Inn at Irving Place, but you will get some sleep. And really, which would you rather have?
If you answered street cred, I remind you to look elsewhere.
