f you build it, they will come. Even if you build it in a hotel lobby; French brasserie Elixir and Opus Bar have been attracting the sexiest crowd in the city since day one. This hotel indiscriminately caters to a hip, fashionable, image-conscious clientele. Designed to blend into the heritage-designated neighbourhood that was the West Coast rail terminus - now known as Yaletown - Opus is steps from the inner harbour, shopping, spas and some of the city's hottest tables.
The guestrooms - 96 of them - are individualized, inspired by the colours and sleek lines of a sunny day European Moderne, aspiring to the sophisticated and indulgent comfort of, say a schizophrenic daydream. Most rooms involve vibrant coloured furnishings and walls, and designer bathroom sinks. The rooms are getting much ink for their spa bathrooms with 'rain showers', sliding glass doors, and windows that have great views of Yaletown. Rooms have personalities, it should be noted, and reserving a room takes a bit of a learning curve (Red: is the Modern & Minimalist treatment; Green: releases your inner Artful & Eclectic; Yellow: Tony's room (ask yourself... are you a Tony?); or take the 'Hollywood Glam', puffed up with faux-fur fabrics). One fun item of note; should your require some boutique breathing with your boutique stay, Oxy-Gene' oxygen canisters are in-room accouterments. These are sexy, little containers that hold a whopping twenty liters of oxygen-enriched air, allowing for twelve full minutes of breathing pleasure. - R.B.
