ow here's something you probably didn't know: the term ‘art deco’ was popularized by art historian Bevis Hillier in his book, Art Deco of the 20s and 30s. Originally known as 'Style Moderne', it is a style that incorporates aluminum and stainless steel (thanks, Wiki) and permeates every inch of Miami’s historic art deco district in which The Clay Hotel is located.
N.B.T Roney settled in Miami in 1918 with a strong desire to create a bohemian Spanish villa modeled after the Mediterranean villages found in France and Spain. Purchasing the Clay Hotel in the early twenties, he had hoped it would become a haven for the artists, writers and musicians in Miami at that time. Instead, the hotel became a haven of a different sort when mob boss Al Capone set up his gambling ring here in the 1930’s. Who’s going to tell Al Capone to get lost?
Today the hotel is nothing short of a historic gem located in the heart of Miami’s art deco district. Visited by celebrities, students and A-listers from all over the world, The Clay Hotel’s illustrious past and humble begins are what make it stand out from other hotels built much later.
