ith branches in Arizona, Massachusetts, and Nevada, Canyon Ranch has now opened in Miami Beach. Half-spa, half-hotel, this boutique brand has housed their Miami outpost in the former Carillon Hotel.

Canyon Ranch offers more than just a place to sleep. They aim to give their customers the complete body-wellness experience. They have a fully-equipped gym which includes a rock-climbing wall, fitness classes, and personal trainers. The spa is a stunning 70,000 square feet. The beach is 750 feet long; the restaurants, such as the Canyon Ranch Grill offer gourmet, but healthy, food. After all that running and massaging and eating well, you can get your hair, nails, and make-up done at the salon.

None of which makes it sound like a great vacation, but the Canyon Ranch in Tuscon ranked second for Destination Spas in the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards in 2008; Canyon Ranch Lenox placed third. So I guess there are people out there to whom this kind of stuff appeals. This writer would prefer to stay home with her books and TV in the middle of winter rather than go to the gym every day as part of her vacation, but wouldn’t mind the spa and salon services. It’s a toss-up. I suppose you could go and just wave at the gym-goers on the way to your massage… - J.A.
