André Balazs continues to dominate the NYC hotel scene with his latest venture in the hospitality industry – The Standard. Of course he hopes this Meatpacking retreat will become the hotel to which all other hotels in New York are measured, hence the moniker.
Polshek Partnership Architects are behind the design of Meatpacking property that Balazs paid a large $24 million for. Straddling the still developing High Line Park, the Standard's name has become increasingly apropos as it signals the area's shift in tenor.
No longer a bastion for proletarian industry, the neighborhood near the High Line has seen an influx of Bobo culture, with cafes, restaurants, and, well, hotels, beginning to spring up. The location has a natural allure in that it's a good starting point for touristy wanders, yet its quintessential New York-ness provides coveted genuineness.
Though the Standard is a chain of sorts, with three previous outposts (Hollywood, Los Angeles, Miami), each one remains wholly unique. While this one is by no means completely online, it is soft open. Thus, some of its allures and amenities remain forthcoming. To placate early lodgers, Standard is offering a decent rate.
It should go full-service this summer, with its impending steakhouse, additional rooms, and various other amenities becoming available shortly.
Modern, imposing, and neighborhood re-defining, the Standard could become a legend. Even if you already live in New York, it's worth a fact-finding mission. -E.J. with S.T.
