nfortunately, brilliance has an expiry date as evident from the early deaths of the Romantic poets (think Byron, think Keats) but in a time where TB wasn’t as common as catching the flu, the only kind of consumption a talented writer could succumb to was mental illness. Such was the case for the acclaimed French Canadian poet, Émile Nelligan, of whom the hotel is eponymously named after.
Fortunately, his handlers ensured his poetry was published, if not for their own financial gain, and you can gain access to Nelligan’s literary genius via his poetic verses scrawled on the walls. Ironically this is actually appropriate in relation to the history of the hotel’s previous tenants that includes the Canadian Paper Company.
Adhering to a boho boutique hotel aesthetic with modern day conveniences, Hotel Nelligan employs an exposed brick décor, a gorgeous atrium, accommodating staff, and a killer Old Montreal location. A fitness centre, spa, famed restaurant Verses and an in-room Jacuzzi option are features that make this boutique hotel an excellent accommodation destination. -E.J.
