1 HotelAsk yourself this question: When viewing the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn, does the breathtaking view of a lit up skyline make you proud to be from NYC or does it make you hang your head in shame when you visually witness the sheer amount of wasted energy consumed by the plethora of buildings to keep their towers aglow in the evening?

Before you answer, there is good news coming for those scared shitless about Global Warming (thank you Al Gore for instilling this fear in my subconscious).
The eco-minded Starwood Capital Group is launching “1” – the first “green” hotel adhering to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards overlooking the city’s magical nugget of green space, Bryant Park, next door to the New York Public Library (where you can conduct all your Energy saving research).

There are many energy saving features that will allow jet-setting, cosmopolitan individuals to continue to enjoy a life of luxury without sacrificing the quality of life they’ve grown accustomed to. Do you remember the three R’s? Reduce, reuse, recycle? This is the hotel’s unspoken mantra, as you will see form their environmentally friendly upgrades.

As for the lighting issue which can consume great quantities of a building’s overall energy use, occupancy sensors, lighting controls and Energy Start appliances will be installed, thus making the building 30% more efficient than the NY State code outlines. Local materials and recycled-content will be the main concentration when constructing the tower. Wind power, hydro and biomass are three alternative and renewable energy sources from which the hotel will derive 50% of their energy. Non toxic cleaning and landscaping products, clean air friendly materials and a reduction in irrigation water are also positive features that will make guests rest easy (and prolong the next ice age from happening in twenty years).

Accordingly, you can expect the celebrity big wigs that have publicly lent their names to gain awareness about Global Warming to lodge here when in the city, although they’ll have to wait until the tower opens in 2010. I hear they’ve already got specific décor orders for Mr. Gore’s and Leo’s own rooms. Just kidding!
